Would I be able to get any sort of experience in a Rifter?

Getting sick of carebear life in hi-sec, wanted to try some PvP. I'm almost done getting Small Projectile Weapons up to 5 so I can use Level 2 turrets, but will I really be able to get a fair fight in a small frigate? Or will I come across a 0.0 gate camp and get annihilated by a few cruisers or a BS?

No, use a TD armor slasher or a thrasher.

The Rifter is terrible.

Or just go to FW lowsec, its swarming in frigs.

Alright, so I got a semi decent Tharsher fit to run as soon as AutoCannon Specialization is done. Any particular way to fly this? Other than activate boosters, damage control, all weapons, energy neut and orbit at optimal range?

Define 'semi decent Thrasher fit'.

Do yourself a favour; join the R-V-B channel in-game and ask them. You might also want to consider joining. You can have a lot of fun in frigate brawls.

If you follow that you will die under 10 secs. As others before me i advise going to RVB or FW (its cruel self study in the second variant).

Sure, you will get experience, but a lot of it will be exploding. Just make sure you learn something new every time you do explode.

Pro tip: finding a corp (or other group of friends) to fly together with instead of solo both reduces your chances of dying horribly, and increases your chances of learning useful things more quickly.

This is the fit I had in mind:
http://eve.battleclinic.com/loadout/58888-Space-Jew-039-s-Thrasher.html

OR, for those of you who can't into links:
Gyrostabilizer II
Damage Control II

Medium Shield Extender II
J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I
Limited 1MN Microwarpdrive I

200mm AutoCannon II
200mm AutoCannon II
200mm AutoCannon II
200mm AutoCannon II
200mm AutoCannon II
200mm AutoCannon II
200mm AutoCannon II
Small Energy Neutralizer II

Small Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I
Small Core Defense Field Extender I
Small Core Defense Field Extender I

Most likely will get rid of the rigs just because if I plan on exploding every hour or so, I don't want to lose 10 million every time.

That is good. I usually go 3 CDFE, with the higher base Armor resists the EM resist is as high as thermal without the rig. More likely to run into Merlins, Incursus spewing Kin Therm and Projectile Ships running PP and Warrior / Hammerhead Drones. Even Amarr EM Ships do Therm Dmg so the EM hole not as big a deal to a Thrasher especially with the base Armor Resists.

Another thing I like to use to trip people up.

[Thrasher, Backwards]
400mm Reinforced Steel Plates II
Damage Control II

Limited 1MN MicroWarpdrive I
J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I
Stasis Webifier II

200mm AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet Phased Plasma S
200mm AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet Phased Plasma S

200mm AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet Phased Plasma S
Rocket Launcher II, Caldari Navy Inferno Rocket

Small Trimark Armor Pump I
Small Trimark Armor Pump I
Small Trimark Armor Pump I

Slow as nails 1400m/s but no one expects to be webbed, helps apply real DPS to Frigs especially to AB Ships. Sometimes I throw on a Dmg Rig.

This is an awesome fit.

Or Op can just slap sebos and 280's, faction ammo nano+mwd, about 2k speed is more than it's needed to gtfo, a very nice tracking and alpha for pods and one shot frigs (except t2 ones unless badly fitted)

1st; Yes, you certainly can. I fly Rifters all the time, and I do very well in them. The Rifter can still fight every other T1 frig in the game (rail Ishkurs and Merlins can be a pain, but arent impossible) and many interceptors; the Taranis, in particular, if dual prop fit, is rifter fodder. Dessies are best left alone, but I have killed a few, as well as cruisers, BCs, and the like in a regular old Rifter. The Rifter just requires a bit more intelligence to fly well; it isnt simply heat all, orbit at 500, pew.

2nd; RvB is good advice. Join "the Autocannon" which is the channel of the Black Rebel Rifter Club, and you can get advice there from some simply outstanding frig pilots. There is an entire subculture within EVE of solo frigate pilots, almost all of whom got our start in the Rifter, and many of us who still fly it, because it's just a lot of fun. The Slasher, Incursus, Tormentor, Merlin, Kestrel, Condor, Atron, all are viable solo frigates now, and a few more will be added to that list shortly with the update.

3rd; Destroyers are great fun and cheap. Dont hesitate to buy one and head off for losec or null. A 6m isk thrasher can kill a 50m isk assault frigate, simply because a lot of AF pilots are pretty bad. Like, bad.

4th; Look up the combat record for Sid Afraldir. He's a good friend of mine, and he began flying rifters (and killing things) when he was 3 days old in EVE, and if i recall correctly, his 1st kill was a Thrasher. I made an alt once and did a similar thing, throwing it into RvB just to see if a brand new character was actually viable in pvp. The answer is yes.

Go kill things.

Well, I just popped my cherry. First kill I got in low sec, completely forgot about the security and gate turrets. One thrasher and .4 of my security status later, I'm back in another one. This time I head to null sec. Find a decent spot, Crow warps in, I lock and scramble, orbit at 5 km. Take him out, but not before two other guys show up and kill me.

I gotta say, after living a life entirely focused around industry and missioning, this feels SO good.

It feels so good, I know it exactly. Now one thing you should know before dropping everything to move to low/null to blow things up: make a supply chain/alt character. PvP is fun, but it costs money. You WILL lose ships, and probably lose them often. Make sure you can pay for nice things for a long time. I made that mistake, and had to move back out because I was just losing money faster than I could bring it in on loot and LP (kills just aren't worth much).

most frig fights are decided by the pilot who has the b*lls to turn on all their guns and hit approach first, regardless of fitting.

After a while you will notice this doesn't work against all pilots and start to realise slight changes to your strategy based on opponents fit and experience. This is how you finese your PVP skills.

Start simple -> build experience -> be pro

Fixed it for you. Doesn't matter if it's 1v1 or not. Split the tackle from the blob, overheat everything, kill the tackle, try to get out.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Nothing beats T1 frigs for shear adrenalin because everything goes so fast.
