Hey There!

Any Industrialists out there? Yes? Good!

Decided to stray into doing Reverse Engineering, after having a plethora of low grade Sleeper parts sitting around that really have no value to me. The problem is, i'm having a bit of a hard time trying to work out what skills i NEED to train to get RE, and then what else would be helpful to train on top. Also, what sort of levels its best to have the skills at to best increase the % chance of a succession attempt.

So without further ado, ill open to floor to comments.

Skills required to perform RE

Additional skill requirements to perform the actual reverse engineering on the relic are listed after the bracketed requirements of the Subsystem Technology skills.

Reverse Engineering (requires science 5, Metallurgy 4 and Research 4)
Offensive Subsystem Technology (requires Research 5, Science 5, Engineering 5, High Energy Physics 4) plus Plasma Physics 1
Propulsion Subsystem Technology (requires Research 5, Science 5, Engineering 5, Graviton Physics 4) plus Rocket Science 1
Electronic Subsystem Technology (requires Research 5, Science 5, Electronics 5, Electronic Engineering 4)
Engineering Subsystem Technology (requires Research 5, Science 5, Engineering 5, High Energy Physics 4) plus Quantum Physics 1
Defensive Subsystem Technology (requires Science 5, Nanite Engineering 4, Electronics 5) plus Hydromagnetic Physics 1

You can pull up some more info from http://www.eve-guides.com/ui/reverseeng.php but those are the skills needed. For building subsystems you will need the racial starship engineering to 4 and to build the hulls you need to get the racial to 5.

You need to do alot of research to see if T3 is going to be worth the SP and time investment. Things to know.

#1 T3 building is very skill intensive. Since the RE components are really expensive you want all the RE skills and their support skills at least to 4; this takes like 4 months or so. Using wrecked relics you will only have a 56% success with level 4 skills. Couple that with the high price of relics and decryptors and you can see that failures get expensive fast.

#2 You can't RE or build T3 subs in stations so you will need a POS with experimental labs and subsystem arrays. A medium POS will work just fine and last I knew costs about 175 mil/month to run. You will need you own POS unless you totally trust the people in your corp with installing/building billions worth of materials at a time. This also means you will need to grind standings and manage a POS yourself.

#3 RE is very tedious. It only takes 1 hr to do so you will be logging in regularly if you want to keep your lines going. It also takes 2.75 hrs to manufacture a 10 run BPC. The invention/RE interface sucks and your mouse will never forgive you for all the clicking required to setup 10 jobs every hour.

#4 T3 Subs are very "dense" when it come to isk/m3. It is very easy to build 10+bil ISK in subs in just 1 day and with the upcoming orca nerf transporting all of your supplies is going to take a lot of trips. Especially, since 1 Offensive T3 BPC is worth 800mil and only takes up 400m3. The others aren't too cheap either averaging around 200mil/BPC so you can easily become a gank magnet.

#5 You have probably done some calculations(I hope you have) and see the "amazing profits" to be made. This is not totally the case. First remember that roughly half of the RE will fail. Second, there are only 1-2 "good" ones for each racial subsystem so you will have about a 25% chance of getting a good one. From experience I can say the chance of getting the really good ones are less than that. For instance out of 50 RE runs I get mostly tengu offensive BPC for magnetic and rifling subs and only get 2-3 accelerated ejection bays. These "bad" subs are never profitable to make so they are considered failures also.

#6 If you take a look at the graphs on the market you can see every subsystem has been crashing over the last few months. This is probably due to the tengu nerf causing more people to diversify into the other races flooding the market with subs, large null alliances moving away from tengu doctrines decreasing demand, and people moving back into WH space now that incursions and FW were nerfed thereby flooding the market with cheap sleeper salvage. Strategic cruisers are also set to be rebalanced probably next summer so people will be liquidating stocks as much as possible in fear of nerfs crashing the market.

#7 You can make a ton of subs in 1 day but selling them is another matter. Some sell really well others may only see 1-2 sold per day. I usually make 1 build worth 10 bil (about 3bil profit) a month and it takes the whole month to sell everything if I'm lucky. So your profits will be volume limited and since practically the only place to sell them in decent numbers is jita there will be tons of competition.

I know I didn't talk much about the skills you asked for but this should give you a better understand of T3 manufacturing. There is ISK to be made but right now the market is only going down :S

Cheers for the responses guys, it is much appreciated!

Margeous, thanks for the skill list, i shall get working on them now. just getting Engineering to V, and then can get going with the Physics skills then.

Arcosian, Thanks for the input mate, it is welcomed highly. Most of the stuff you mentioned, i had already thought about. The majority of it, concerning cost, shouldnt be an issue, as i am a wormhole occupant, with an indy alt that isnt really doing much at the moment.. The datacores, decryptors and parts are pretty easy to come by, so even if i fail most of them, i still get something for basically nothing.. i've already got a nice stockpile of components to start working on when my skills are there.:D

In terms of the market, i am probably going to focus on non-tengu projects until the impact of the nerf becomes obvious... and the decryptors are a pain to find....

in terms of haulage, i might try and build complete units, and then fly them out, that SHOULD make me less of a gankable target..:D

And Finally Tau, thanks. that helps alot too!

Thanks guys!
