Noctis vs Salvage Drones

Alright so it is assumed that salvage drones can't actually loot wrecks, so they'll be leaving behind a trail of cargo pods floating in space.

If this is true, then while that is certainly good news for keeping the Noctis employed, it kind of makes salvage drones rather limited. They're only real purpose would be to salvage loot-less wrecks. So instead of being overpowered, they're actually kind of underpowered.

Unless, of course, they can grab loot and prevent cargo pod litter as well - but that puts them right back into the overpowered category that threatens Noctis viability again.

I'm wondering how they intend to balance it?

And what exactly is your problem with a battlenoctis buff? (Referring to drone bay on noctis)

Noctis will have 25m3 drone bay for salvage drones (and probably for other drones also). So problem is solved I think.

Noctis is overpowered beyond measure. Even on my Marauder I preferred to bookmark all wrecks and process them on Noctis once in 2 hours, because it was easier and faster.

ps: seriously CCP, it's time to boost that stupid Marauder bonus Straight

Right now we have the Noctis as the de facto salvage ship. It is so popular of a ship that it has it's own skill dedicated to it (ORE Industrial, which applies to no other ship that I'm aware of). The Noctis is the way to clear out dozens of wrecks out to 80km, all while sitting comfortably in one spot, raking in the goodies.

And now salvage drones are no longer just an April Fool's prank or an urban legend. It looks like they're happening for real this time. I can't wait.

But what does this mean for the future of the Noctis? Will this niche ship become completely obsolete? Will the salvage drones skill and the ORE industrial skill end up switching places?

Now I know what people are going to say - "Have CCP simply give Noctis a drone bay and let it use salvage drones itself to be an even better salvagver!" Good in theory, but here's the reality: Adding a drone bay to the Noctis will simply encourage people to load it with combat drones and turn it into a low-grade combat ship for loot farming. (Heck knows, that's what I would do with it - seems rather obvious). So we can rule that out.

"But at max skill the Noctis can tractor beam from 80km, you can't beat that range!" - and, of course, at max skill a player's drones can also reach 80km range (coincidence?) ... and if they don't have max skill then they can just slap in a range extender. Again, the drones win the contest.

Now for someone like me, who's been flying Myrmidons almost exclusively for a long time now, I can say with confidence that I can spare the 25m3 of drone bay space to fit some salvage drones if it means never having to (go back for/have a flunky with) a Noctis to do the clean up.

I'm sure that CCP has some plan up it's sleeve to keep the Noctis useful (right?) and maybe even expand that whole Ore Industrial skill to apply to more than just one frikkin' ship in the game (right?) and that salvage drones won't be the alpha & omega solution to all salvaging problems (right?). I just wish they'd share that plan with me.

Rich people use the noctis, lazy, poor people will use drones.....and be forever poor......Lol

I remember reading a while back the drones would have a lower chance to salvage resulting in a lower quality salvage. I highly doubt they will out-perform and rigger Noctis

There is no “quality” in the salvage and what you get has nothing to do with your chance of salvaging. A lower salvaging chance just means you have a lower chance of getting anything on an individual cycle — if it's too low for the wreck, you'll never get anything.

Someone will inevitably field a Carrier with 5 drone slot mods to field 15 salvage drones and give us a screenie of them doing it, "just for teh lulz".

Probably the only missions I would bother with salvage drones. And they would be good out in the Drone regions maybe. But other than that, the Noctis out performs them in every aspect of looting and salvaging.

If someone would be so kind, could someone let me know what the access%, size, and speed of them are.

Also, does anyone know if they work on magnometric sites? If so, that's one less highslot I need to dedicate.

Actually, my guess is when the rebalance scalpel reaches the Mauraders, that particular bonus will go away to be replaced with something more useful.

I could be wrong, but I'd be surprised.

De'Veldrin's Corollary (to Malcanis' Law): Any idea that seeks to limit the ability of a large nullsec bloc to do something in the name of allowing more small groups into sov null will inevitably make it that much harder for small groups to enter sov null.

Until they make tractor drones (briefly imagines John Deere green and yellow drones, chuckles) the Noctis will still be king. It will really only help mission blitzers who don't pick up loot. But will the little guys salvage fast enough even for them is the question.

I would assume that the drones don't benefit from salvage tackles and that their access chance is low. Which means you'll either have to focus the flight on one target at a time, or spend a lot of time spreading them out, waiting for them to access.

Noctis will be just fine.

Speaking statistically, it is faster to use one drone per wreck on 5 wrecks, compared to 5 drones on 1 wreck X5 wrecks. It's the same for slavagers.

Having said that much, drones will never replace the Noctis due to travel time and inefficiency of salvage chance. I see them as a "poor man's" salvaging solution. Otherwise drones would be good for grabbing an occassional juicy wreck while in your DPS ship.

The other ORE industrial would be the Primae.

If salvage drones salvage rogue drones is it cannibalism?
