I really don't think they do, and your question, OP, only exposes your ignorance of MANY things.

Minus 10 points to Hufflepuff. You didn't read the thread, this is not a miner bashing thread.

EDIT: Without miners I would not have had ships to suicide gank with and suicide gank targets, they were integral to the last few weeks of my stay in EVE.

I know it's not a bashing thread. It's just an idiotic question.

No question is idiotic if it is asked for the sake of increasing knowledge or expanding understanding.

I mine for several different reasons. First, to me mining is just as repetitive as targeting and shooting red pluses in my overview and I don't have to deal with the rocks shooting back at me. Other than keeping an eye on the intel channel, I can relax and chat with my corpmates after a stressful work day.

Second, when I set a new industrial goal for myself, I like to build as much of it "from scratch" as I can. At least the first time. For example, when I built a freighter for one of my alts, I had enough cash to just buy one or I could have just bought all the minerals along with the BPC pack. But i wanted to build it myself so I bought just the pack and mined every mineral required. Was it the most efficient use of my time isk-wise? Almost certainly not. However, IMHO, it's a perfect example of the sandbox. I set my own goal in the game and worked to achieve it. I had fun working towards the goal and felt like I'd achieved something when I was done.

Finally, while I understand that the minerals I mine aren't free, mining them allows me to choose to trade my time to save isk when I want to make a large investment. It allows me to maintain isk reserves so that if something comes up and I don't have time to gather the minerals, I can just buy it outright.

Thank you, oh wise sir, for pointing out this subtle, and difficult to discern fact!

Idiot.

Like what? Besides why some people find mining interesting, which was the whole point of the inquiry!

Tell me, what else am I ignorant of? It certainly isn't what the purpose of mining is in the game, and I am well-versed on the much of the economy of EVE, barring null-sec PI.

I decided to justify this idiotic post with more direct answers as this person decided to backpedal hard, changing their angry raging at apparent anti-mining propaganda to judging the question as idiotic once they actually read the thread. Stick to your guns, mean what you say or perhaps think, and then keep it to yourself since it adds no value.

Why do I mine...hmm. Because I use it to kill time. My job is stressful enough and it's nice to relax and feel like I'm doing something. Not to mention, I find it fun to sit back and Bullshit with other people that aren't A-Holes. It is low risk (I don't really have the time to rebuy a ship that I have lost). If I get into combat, it is cause of something I'm doing wrong.

Most PI in Null is driven by local politics (and the interest in destroying someone else's work) as much as the planets involved. Even more so once the POCOs come online. That's just the nature of Sov today; I look forward to seeing what changes are wrought to Null in future.

Anyway, you've responded to all the other reasonable posts here. I'm curious - why not mine? (reverse pun not intended) A bit surprised that you've found someone who mines these days out of altruism? Cool

I enjoy creating "things", be they just bits in the game, but I make them so that I can get them blown to pieces later. Sure, I could just buy the minerals I need wholesale on the market and then put them in the oven and then put the products on the market. But I get just as much enjoyment from gathering the materials to make the things I want to make. With every MMO I've played I've always been a trade skill junkie. I always tried my best to be mostly self sufficient from player markets with insane prices. Yeah it takes time to mine, but it's time I enjoy to do PI, watch the market in game, talk with corp mates, make plans, or other things that I can be allowed to do for those breaks between cycles.

I miss the hum of the mining lasers... it had a meditative quality to them.

What is your motivation In posting in a forum like this and trolling some of the responses.
What makes you want to do this? Is insecurity in yourself and a need to feel superior to others by means of putting them down??
Even though my viewpoint is that you are waste of skin, I am curious as to why this entertains you, the troll poster.

No point in answering because obvious bait post is obvious

Simple, I enjoy it.

No idea why. Should be boring as hell. But it's fun. It's especially fun in grav sites, when you can kill off some truly massive rocks. When I lived in null, our static grav site had an enormous spodumain rock. I worked on it for days. Good times.

Mining with a group is even better. When you get a bunch of hulks, an orca and several haulers, and you can just spend hours cleaning out entire systems. It doesn't even matter what ore is selling best, you just strip everything in range, and move on.

I started out in this game by going the Miner/Industrialist route. I like it because, as others have said, it makes me more self-sufficient. I can go out and mine and gather resources that I need to make the things that I need, and for me it gives it a more personal touch: Gives the ships/components I make an interesting backstory.

I can switch it up by doing more mission running and probably gain alot more ISK/hour, but it's about doing what I enjoy.

I currently do not mine regularly, I did when first starting the game.

My original reason was to see how far in mining I could go. And for awhile, that included Null; I've seen Mercoxit clouds. Smile

Later, when time became a constraint (and my frantic** 1-2 hour high-sec sessions were no longer possible), I've mined purely for the benefit of others - corp or alliance. I still do this today, if mining as part of corp (pure donation, no payment).

One of the advantages touted here in group mining is the opportunity to have a captive audience (fleet chat). That should not be discounted; Some of the best advice (and interesting PvE/PvP fittings) I've gained over my time here was over the mining fleet chat and/or voice comms. I try to return the favor here as well, when possible.

** Its always baffled me why people find mining relaxing. It never has been for me, but I can get a bit OCD over never having an idle laser. This has gotten worse with the ability to field T2 crystals. Lol And no I don't do Ice personally - if you find my other recent posts I've actually been touting the complete replacement of Ice products as PI.

When they changed this and I went to mine on one of those stints I immediately noticed this missing and missed it for a while too. But it was also nice to have an audio cue now of when the cycle starts.

"Because the minerals I mine are free" is how it started anyway i could mine produce stuff and undercut and watch it instantly sell. i did not mind mining and still do it occasionally when i am to lazy to haul boatloads of trit but these days to produce its just easier to buy off the market and make stuff that is actually profitable

Please re-read the post; When mining as part of corp, I'll donate. We all know here that they'll earn better money off me running missions anyway (at least right now).

I've also participated in non-corp mining groups. Those I do expect to be paid.

[Edit - Its also pretty sad when I make twice as much running a POS fuel chain in High than mining the best rock in High atm. And that was before yesterday's POCO bombshell.]

sometimes i like to mine..............its easy for the most part and i can watch tv or read a book or just chat on ts with my friends while doing it

i also like to pvp too but i have mining toons and pvp toons. when i run out of isk and lose all my pvp ships i fire up my mining alt and mine to build new pvp ships for my pvp toon. its called being self sufficient.

i dont have r-l money to buy plex like alot of ye "miners are fail" type "leet" pvper can.

dont get me wrong mining is very boring.... but its alot cheaper than paying full market prices for battle cruisers (welpcanes or drakes) or battleships (hellcats or alpha pests) which 90% of pvp fleets seem to use these days.

i even build capitals from mins i mined

I do it because it allows me a stable income i can use to invest in other things, such as trading. It's also a tangible way to see your effect in the eve universe. I only have the one account, and I use my mining time to browse the forums and learn some tips.

I mine because it's guaranteed isk and I enjoy building and selling stuff. The more I mine myself the less that I have to buy from the market. I've always enjoyed being as self-sufficient as I can. At the end of the day I feel like I've been very productive and I have enjoyed myself. Plus mindlessly mining gives me time to socialize with other people in Eve.

I've tried PvPing and the whole time all I could think about is how much isk I was loosing while waiting for fleets to get together, waiting at a gate for the fleet on the other side to jump into us (only to lag out and never fire a shot when one side does decide to jump), camping a station and all the other time consuming fleet activities. When PvPing, most of the time I feel like I have wasted my time at the end of the day. I also like to socialize with people in Eve. When PvPing, most of the time you are have to stay quiet and listen for instructions so there isn't much socializing going on.

It's just a totally different mindset. PvPers can't understand what drives true miners/industrialist and true miners/industrialist can't understand what drives PvPers.

Oh yea, almost forgot. As long as I can make enough isk to pay for my accounts with GTCs and still have extra left for side projects then I'll continue to play Eve. True there are more efficient ways to make isk in Eve other than mining, but most of them require way too many mouse clicks and way too much concentration.

Eve to me is a way to relax after a long day at work and a way to socialize with friends.
