If EvE is not gaining new players even close to expansions is because CCP are unable to both polish old content and add new features.
They used to release new feature after new feature (including big stuff like WHs) that spiked player base but were made with the ass, now they are polishing old features that people are using since years so they don't entice new players to join.

Which is exactly what a mature game should be doing.

EVE is not going to get a mass rush of new players because of an expansion but if existing players like the changes and word gets around there will be enough new players to balance out the losses.

The irony is, I think EVE totally can get a massive rush of new players. CCP just has to take a deep breath and step out of their comfort zone.

Walking in stations, if properly done, had the potential to do that. What they hinted at for the future (Space Hulk-like gameplay) has the potential to bring subs. Directly piloting the ship (especially with a joystick) has the potential to do that. Introduction of a cockpit (even if it is purely esthetic) has the potential to do that. Being able to take direct control of a turret on your battleship (you aim manually, but when you hit, your hits do significantly more damage - risk vs reward), similar to Wing Commander. Allowing multiple pilots to the same ship (one pilots, one uses one gun battery, another uses the other battery, etc.) has the potential to really shake up the game. They could also do something crazy like add collision detection, allowing big ships to shield other craft with their bodies - a feature that worked amazingly well in Pirates of the Burning Sea (MMO, 2008) - and allow "terrain" (structures, asteroids) to be projectile-collidable as well. Stuff like that.

Don't get me wrong, that they're doing now is fine (Crimewatch, FW, AI, etc), but it won't attract new players. Or if it does, it'll mostly be looky-loo subs that will be gone in a month.

I thought playing other video games while having EVE open was standard practice. Shocked

Retribution expansion comes out same time as Far Cry 3?

Well that just frickin' sucks because my new subframe bushings and short box ram air intake for my Volvo come in that day as well.

How the hell am I supposed to think about playing EVE, instal these new parts, and totally forget that I could give a crap Far Cry 3 comes out on the same day as Retribution?

Sounds perfect - the extended down-time will give you all the time you need for your installation and ignoring FC3 Blink

Play FarCry 3 when

- you download / install Retribution
- during downtime
- when sitting in station while camped

etc.

Don't be scared, because being afk is not a crime.
