Eve Needs New Blood! (aka random troll thread)

AttentionFollowing text contains some serious bitching&whining, read at your own riskAttention

I feel that the game has become so complex that only the 'smart' people have the skill and will to learn and understand it. Pewpew is only fun if you're in an alliance, which means you cant be a casual player logging 1h a day to do some killin'. Not only that but pewpew itself is boring as ****!

When I heard of Dust I thought the promise of FPS-superfuntime coupled with the seriousness of Eve might attract the BF and CoD crowds and give us something fun to do, like... you know... play a couple of Team Deathmatches in Jita while waiting for our orders to fill. But then someone at CCP thought it would be funny to release it for PS3 only, thus ensuring no respectable FPS:er or current eve-player ever buys it.

So, the result is: a large percentage of eve player-base consists of RL financial experts and in-game manufacturing moguls moving in ever tightening circles trying to make profit by undercutting each other, while no one is actually buying their wares. New players find it hard to make decent amount of isk that would justify all the grinding and I find that the 'buzz' after reactivating my account wears of faster and faster, and the breaks between my Eve-fix become longer and longer.

The point of that little rant is that I believe that Eve needs to expand and attract new players and that perhaps the game needs to be dumbed down a bit in order to achieve that. Without new blood there can be no hope for this mmorpg.

Id like to hear what you guys think. Do you agree? If so, how far are you willing to go to make the game more appealing to nabcakes? Or perhaps you think that ^ was a load of crap and I should shut my pie-hole and go back to mining ice? All input is welcomed!

Is that what the kids are calling crack rocks these days? I certainly don't want EVE to appeal to hard drug users.

CCP has no sense of humour.

There is a learning curve to this game which is steeper than many other games out there. The penalty for failure is also higher Twisted

It was designed this way; no free lunches in this game and no game masters to get you out of trouble. It means EvE won't necessarily appeal to the masses but has attracted a loyal following.

Funny how you have "mining ice" and "doing pvp" in the same post.

I agree with the OP. Don't like the fact Eve needs dumbing down, but it's necessary.

I just turned into an egg, did I level up? I spent an hour trying to salvage a wreck, when in local a guy said "Stop it, this is my Tempest, I was AFK"

I somehow feel like this thread is heading for a lock...

...But yes. I agree that, while EVE's style of play makes for a loyal following, it's not really a long- term commercially viable business model to exclude people based on ability. Look at games like Call of Duty or Halo: anyone can play them with varying degrees of success, but someone playing for the first time still has an ability to do well. EVE not only requires setup and testing to do well, but this takes time and money (along with a steep learning curve), and many "modern" gamers are not willing to invest that. MMO's are leaning more towards making it accessible for everyone (see: TES Online, Farmville), and I fear that EVE is not a financial juggernaut to stand against the flow.

Your post is pretty LOL but I do agree with this part:

I seriously have no idea whose idea it was to not make it a PC game but that choice is going to doom it to failure IMO.

My personal view is this: Theres tons of mmo's out there for dump people. Im playing eve, becouse it challenges my brain, it takes smart to become good at it. I have played wow, lotro and few other allready forgotten ones. They didint challenge me. EvE did.

In 2008 little did i know when my wife sayd "Try EveOnline, i think you might like it....". Now 4 years later im still playing eve. I play those other mmo´s only casually now and then randomly.

To me, Eve is how games should be. Challenge to those with brains. We dont need millions of people playinf this game, theres no hardware cabable to handle that ammount of load in single shard world. Most of us are here becouse eve is different then anything else out there in internet land.

So you claim it should be made more dump people friendly? I disagree, eve would lost its uniqueness among mmo´s if they would do that. Its kept eve allive for 9 years allready. I would suspect eves still there when Wow and others have long closed down allready.

Emerging gameplay and content cant be beaten by punch of programmers in some office somewhere. Players are always more creative, more sneaky, always finding way to test those perceived barriers of what you can do ingame.

Biggest headlines eve has made in gameing industry newssites are becouse players have done something. First massive heist and assasination anyone? Player riots when ccp messed things up, etc... All emergent gameplay from players, not from programmers.

Couldn't disagree more. Then again, I only skimmed over the words 'only played by smart people' and 'dumbed down'.

Try piracy. ...would be my answer.

Catcher's mitt camp:

Set up a small bubble 600km behind a gate in null in-line with the next gate. Anchor a dozen or so cans in front of it. Even cloaked, anyone going gate to gate w/o an interdiction nullifyer is going in your bubble and getting decloaked on the way. Its fun. You should try it. You can even do it solo.
