How to locate someone in a system

So this guy in my militia kept asking for help because he was being attacked by some pirates in random system. So i fly out to the system he is at but I just couldn't seem to find him. I used my D scan and located the general direction him and the pirates where but every place that I went to they where not there. Is there a better way to find someone without having to use combat probes?

Even if I did find him its not like I could have helped, since I was flying a kestral with a cheap fit, but it would have been fun. Im guessing he blew up somewhere though, RIP random militia guy.

3 ways to locate people in a system:

1.) Ask them exactly where they are (if it's a normal spot like Planet IX - Asteroid Belt 3).
2.) Probe them out with combat probes
3.) Get into the same fleet as him and you should be able to warp to him

In your case, point 3.

If he would invited you to a fleet he was in you would have warped straight to him to try and safe his ass.

If he wasn't at some warpable location (planet, belt, station, plex, etc) he had to at BM or in mission pocket or anomaly. Without combat probes you won't find him. But since he was asking for help couldn't you fleet with him and warp to him? Or they don't teach you about fleets in FarmfestWare?

He said he was going to fleet me but never did, so i floated around space for a few a while and then left when I saw he was gone from local. Im sure he fast traveled home via podded.

Oh well, I tried. Thanks for the info guys

1 > Fly somewhere you can hang out for a while. I prefer a planet at 100Km.
2 > Set d-scan to 360 degrees accuracy. Scan. Confirm the target is in scan range.
3 > Open the solar map (F10) and set d-scan to 5 degrees accuracy.
4 > Line up a celestial within range with your current position.
5 > Press scan, presto: you now know what's on the celestial you picked.
6 > Repeat untill you locate the target. Repeat step 2 if you lost the target.

Which will take more time then it takes the enemy to kill the ship.

So wow, you've found someones wreck after it took you ages to finally get a fix on him (specially if he is some randomly generated mission pocket).

A planet is not somewhere you can hang around for a while. Get into that habit and lowsec is gonna be a real treat buddy :)

^ That too, planets are always the first things people check for when someone warps into a direction of a planet.

100km is even worse as it's also one of the default warp distances so people will definitely use it.

All above posters are right and have very valid points. I just wanted you to know the 5% trick so you can know almost exactly whats on a celestial before you warp to it. You asked how to find people without probes, not how to find them fast or safe. Pirate

I can be mistakes but aren't FW plexes simply shown on the overview because they are public (even the enemy ones) to incite pvp? So wouldn't that make them dead-easy to prioritize? I guess you'll just have to be lucky enough to be in range to scan them down quickly. Being in a Fleet is indeed the only way to instantly warp to a person, and probably the only way to realisticly rescue a ship.

Planets are indeed a horrible location on their own, especially if the system is busy. By hang around for a while I meant the few seconds it takes to scan the FW plexes at 5%. Should you wish to be at a planet for a longer time (for instance, to scan the belts for ratters) I'd make a bookmark near the planet and cloak up.
