Self-confessed carebare here. Sometimes I like to explore low sec for a change of pace but meh, it seems to be an all-or-nothing proposition. You either get insta-popped at a gate camp or you can spend many hours in low sec up to a point where it almost feels like high sec.

But there's nothing inbetween. No close calls. No brushes with death. I thought about solo PVP but I get the feeling it'll be the same thing - hours upon hours spent looking for viable targets, just to get insta-popped by a gate camping blob.

I heard about RvB but that seems kinda lame.

I'm thinking of training up exploration and doing cloaky. ninja stuff in WH or null sec. Is this viable or am I wasting my time?

If you can only find gate camps or complete emptiness in lowsec either you are a perfect scout or complete failure.

When I fly in low sec, I'm in a Vigil with 3x warp stabs and 3 x low friction nozzles. These days I only get popped via smart bombs or when I'm trying to be smart and ninja loot/salvage T2 wrecks at a gate camp e.g. Amamake. Looking around the wreckage in Amamake, though, most other ships don't survive gate camps.

I hear a lot of people express almost exactly this sentiment.

PvPing is very much about learning to find targets and how to travel safely. It's about learning when and when not to burn back to the gate, about learning to use your star map to find targets and gate camps and all the little things like when to pull range etc. I usually go out either by myself or in groups of 4 or 5ish. We get on average 2-3 kills for an hour or two's roaming. We get a lot of near misses.

The last roam I FCed had us running from three different fleets and nearly killing some of their scouts on multiple occasions. Despite killing nothing over the hour we were out, that was probably the most exciting roam I have had in a while. The adrenaline was pumping for the whole roam. Our little 6 man gang got in confrontations with 20+ man gangs on a number of occasions.

In your star maps' options somewhere there is an option to show the average number of people in space over the last 30 mins as well as the number of kills in that system over the last hour. Five minutes browsing the map will find you a good area to roam around and show you where all the likely gate camps are at. You can really use this information to your advantage.

These are the kinds of things CCP should be teaching new players so they can get to grips with PvP. A good PvP fit will get you nowhere without knowing how to navigate the PvP landscape.

Well, that's two attempts at entering low sec Lol

Try a few more times, or find some friends to head into lowsec with. Join a militia or something?

What's lame about always on, instant-gratification PvP?

Exploration is great. I reckon you should start wandering around lowsec in a covert ops frigate or stealth bomber to get used to not dying, before you start taking risks with more expensive ships with exploration gear fitted.

I would argue you need to find a good active corp, other people make EVE. Im biased but i would say Faction Warfare is a good place to start aswell. Find a corp to join in FW (wink wink) and get chatting making friends and shooting other people, you will soon learn that low sec is actually pretty safe most of the time if you know what you are doing and have a couple of friends. Then you will learn how to find find targets ect and fun will be had again.

I'm a carebear as well, heck I have been accused of being the poster child for carebears during past forum altercations, but pvp in high sec in a war is very fun (though I wont budge on my stance of gankers-they are idiots). Find a merc corp that does high sec pvp or a corp that does pvp roams into low. Going into low alone is just boring and cant end well. Like any MMO, the key to having fun is the people you meet in the game.

I thought the game wasn't exciting any more, but then James 315 came along and got me into Miner Bumping - now this is some exciting stuff!

Miner harassment is great fun. Short cycling their rocks in a Procurer really hits 'em in the efficiency.

Ah, good times. :)

To keep things exciting, I stopped scouting ahead. I stopped metagaming entirely. Playing EvE on Safe Mode is not for me.

im pretty much done with this game. i just check forums from time to time and log in to keep skills rolling atleast until my subs run out. game doesnt have its charms anymore and one big reason is 0.0 sea of blues situation and mentality of nobody commiting to any kinda fight if not absolutely sure of win.

To OP:
Although in 4 years I've seen and done most there is to do in eve pvp, there is still excitement, yes. For instance, the last real adrenaline rush was when my cap fleet got unexpectedly hotdropped and I managed to survive and get out by the skin of my teeth.
