That are on trials and have not been active for the past year..

Eve needs to be re-vitalised and this would be a good start.
Just think of all those extra new accounts just to snap up those new names.

And because im that much of a good troll, i will anser the obvious reply now.

Possibly, but unlikely just for a name.. I personally want the Chuck Norris name freed up so i can make an awesome pvp character!

Your proposal doesn't work for several reasons:

  1. It is great marketing for a MMO to be able to say "you can quit and come back anytime without any loss of stuff". I'm seeing some years-old players returning who probably would not have if their characters were deleted.
  2. Personal identity. Karttoon has been inactive for ages, but if his character were to be deleted and some scrub claimed the name, it would cause confusion/distress (plus spoiling a good bit of Eve history).
  3. No automatic name recycling leads to more name originality. NickyYo and Chuckles McNorrison are much better and distinctive names than Chuck Norris. (as a side name, you're not supposed to name characters after real life people)

This topic comes up now and then, and never gets far because not recycling character names automatically makes sense.

Ed: Chuckles McNorrison is not taken as of this post, and I highly recommend grabbing it.

Even by your attention seeking, posting just for the sake of posting standards, this is a bad idea.

I missed four years of play due to illness.

Fortunately, CCP still had my main character name on their data base, so I was able to pick up from where I left off so to speak.

I actually think Corporation names are more important to recycle then character names.

Since character names are two words, and theres like a billion names to choose from you can always pick some random one to use.

On the other hand there are far too many corporations now with a Dotte in their name.

Hi, my name is Dotte.

in respons to earlier comments, I agree that characters of once subscribed accounts should never be deleted, trial account character is, however a different matter.

If a name crisis is ever reached, characters that haven't logged on in years could have their characters renamed to Caldari citizen ##### or whatever, and get the option to rename them without a petition.

This, for sure. There should at least be a reoccurring fee for corps (as there is with alliances), so that if everyone goes inactive, it will eventually automatically disband and free up the name.

I agree with you on all counts, except that in the OP he specifies

While it pains me to admit it, this is not an unreasonable proposal. Those trial characters haven't made a rep for themselves, and after a year it is highly unlikely they will be back. And if they did come back, they really haven't lost a thing.

The problem with this, is people that may have those names added to their contacts list and/or watch list.

Allowing someone to create a name that has already been used at some point is very risky business.

The current naming model allows for so many variations of names that it really would be pointless. Maybe you just need a more vivid imagination for making names.

You don't really think that the contact list, etc references the string w/ the character name instead of a numerical id, do you?

Yes, names. THAT will revitalize EVE. NOT more content, NOT fixing other more pressing issues. NAMES will fix EVE. Another quality thread brought to you by NickyYo.

I fail to see how more PvE will revitalize EvE in any way.

People just need to be imaginative with corp names, I've never had a problem finding one that isn't taken, tickers is another matter altogether.

Ancient mythology is usually quite a good source for corp names, so are the names used by long gone cultures for military units, trades, vehicles etc.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

ETL batch job. Old trial accounts just bloat the DB; longer backup times; performance degradation. Purge.
