Which ship should I work towards?

Hi Guys

Here's the thing.

I've been out of the game for 4 years and it appears a lot has changed. I fancy taking up solo/small group hunting again and want to do it in a ship considered worth the effort.

It needs to be quick enough to run gate camps and catch targets, put out decent dps and have at least some sort of tank.

I have 24.5mil SP mostly in Gallente with a bit of Caldari but I am happy to put several months into cross training if needed.

I have about 1.5bil in liquid isk and am planning on bolstering that while I cross train via exploration, trading etc, but I don't want it to be so expensive that I'm ruined if I lose it.

So far I have only really considered the Vagabond - fast and powerful, but it appears to not be as well rated as it was 4 years ago Cry

So, given all of that, what should I do?

PS. If there are any current Vaga pilots who could give me some words of encouragement and say that it's still a perfectly good ship then please let me know! I know it's not a T3 cruiser but I'm not planning on picking fights in that league yet.

Thanks

Vaga's are still good at what they do although the key problem these days is everything is so much tankier than 4 years ago and the weak damage output of the vaga means you take longer to take ships down thus giving them more time to bring in backup. A Cynabal is a slightly better option, I can't remember what the price difference is for them but Cynabals used to be cheaper than Vaga's so it was a non-brainer.

The other problem you face is the proliferation of Tier 3 BC's that can blap you quite happily from range.

BC's in general are a good choice for reasonably cheap roaming and don't discount the viability of frigates either. Gallente frigs are rather good fun for brawling. Hybrids got a bit of a buff a while back and while so many other things have changed too, currently Enyo's, Comets and others are great fun to fly.

Check out this website. It has plenty of good articles explaining the strenghts and weaknesses of all the ships. You will need to check out some of the latest dev blogs. Mostly for now check out the new changes that will be introduced for balancing of frigates and destroyers, because they will come out in the next expansion on the 4th of December.

Thank you. So battlecruisers are where it's at now huh? Aren't they a bit slow and likely to pop on the first low sec gate camp?

So if you could pick from any of the caldari, gallente or minni options, which would be the choice?

I recall I used to enjoy flying in a brutix at one point.

Edit: having had a read it would appear the hurricanes and tornadoes are quite popular at the moment, yes?

Currently the tier 3 Gallente BC is really quite good and the Myrmidon is a strong contender. I based my advice on what skills you probably have at present because as Nebu Retski points out, changes are coming. Don't go investing heavily in any particular ship type at the moment until final changes are made. Having said that, a whole lot of tech I cruisers look like they will soon be quite viable options. Sadly (although I guess it's only realistic) CCP are implementing these changes in steps so while tech I ships get a buff, it means tech II ships will be found wanting still. Especially HACS.

This sounds negative and I don't mean it to. The changes look good overall and I look forwards to fumbling about with some new tactics and ship assessments.

Yes, the talos looks intriguing and I remember the myrm fondly.

I suggest go for T3. Proteus works fine but if you really like to hunt rather than camping gate Loki should be your choice. With covert fit Loki can have ~500 DPS, ~600 Scan Res, 70KEHP and 1900m/s ( More than 3300m/s ov with Snake set ) but it wont come cheap as i see your problems are:

I you prefer to start small Hawk or Ishkur are most fun to fly but you will be very limited as it comes ship types you will be able to kill.
Cruisers working good in solo - Vaga ( faction point it dam*it ), Rupture, Gila, Cyna, SFI, Broadsword ( great ship really ), Deimos maybe.

BC's Cane (dunno if it will be worth anything after WE ), Drake, Cyclone (2x XASB fit ), Myrm and Tier 3 ships ( if you arent flashy )

I would dearly love a T3 cruiser but the cost alone would ruin any enjoyment for me. I'd be scare to undock the thing. Also, there's quite a few skills to train up to fly them right.

A faction pointed vaga sounds like it could be the way to go since it has better gtfo factor than a deimos.

Having looked into this for a while now I am starting to conclud that solo PvP is a lot harder than it used to be.

But for a player who fancies solo running through low sec once every now and again for laughs, looking for opportunist kills, I am struggling to find a better option than the vaga for that sort of price bracket.

True, it may not have the dps to solo everything it finds, but it can still pack a decent wallop and is still one of the fastest cruisers you can buy.

This last point is important for a solo opportunist; the ability to pick your fights, survive gate camps and gtfo when things go south.

Of course, I will likely not survive getting counter ganked by a high tech group with rapiers, lokis or arazus but not much else would either.

The perma mwd thing may not be the best idea but, if I practice pulsing it, kiting and pick my fights intelligently, I may still be able to survive for a while. I would also drop the cap stuff, put on a second lse and up the dps.

Talos is the answer my friend. Watch Kil2's Talos video on youtube to get an idea on how to use it.

Hi

Lady spank mentioned the cynabal rather then the vaga. I would agree with this- a fraction more (200m vs 300m) however the difference is significant.

There are few ships that can match its speed and so assuming you pilot with some form of skill you should be able to bail when the situation calls for it.

The vaga has excellent tracking however lacks the tank to sustain any real damage. A drake would be able to force you off as would a cane etc. with the cyna both of the aforementioned ships should melt.

The Myrm is a good ship if you have good drone skills - especially as they have released drone damage mods for the low slots. These do suffer on gates in low sec however if taking GCC (mechanics changing soon).

On another note- feel free to mail me ingame if you want to fly with a few people this weekend

Why work towards any ship? Noobships, theyre free, and already bonused with no training, and youre born able to fly one, what is not to love?

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?
