Retirement from the Empyrean Life

Fellow Capsuleers,

This morning I woke again, vaguely dissatisfied with my life, and took an accounting of myself. I've been flying for many years now and, therefore, I have the wealth of Kings, the ability to destroy at will and an unparalleled degree of freedom. And how have I been using all these wondrous gifts?

I live in Captain's Quarters that are smaller than the room I had in my parent's house as a girl. I spend most of the rest of my time immersed in pod goo in a space smaller than the closet I had in the room I had as a girl. I either mine minerals so that others can get rich or I destroy thousands upon thousands of misguided souls who act as cannon fodder for the worst kind of scum in the Cluster and are replaced almost as quickly as I snuff them out.

Recently I spent a two-week study break on the surface of Khanid Prime. Fourteen days of eating proper food, breathing proper air and interacting with people in some method other than at the end of the ballistic trajectory of Heavy Scourge missiles. Needless to say, I enjoyed this - and with the funds I've accrued in my years of service I can easily afford to live out the rest of eternity in a similar manner.

So, I'll be buying some property dirtside and actually living my life for a change. It was a scary decision but now I'm past the fear and most of the way through letting my Ship Crews go and liquidating my assets I'm feeling a strong sense of relief.

I wish you all the best in your future endeavours!

Lady Mai,

While I am sorry to see you retire, it is a perfectly understandable choice, and it sounds like you've made it for the right reasons. Buy yourself a place in the sun and enjoy life. You've certainly earned it.

Keep in mind, though, that retirement doesn't have to last forever. If you should ever feel the call of the stars again, don't hesitate to follow it. The sky will still be there, waiting for you.

I wish you all the best, and hope that you will still stay in touch somehow. I am, and will remain, your friend.

Planetside holdings, and fresh air, are nice and all... but I don't know... I feel like I've outgrown them. I find the steady settings of artificial gravity decks much more comforting than subjecting myself to the natural pull of some baseliner-infested dirtball. They're all different, and that bothers me somehow. I like my gravity at a specific setting.

Emile, you're a gentleman and the flower of the Federation. If you ever feel like a planetside holiday and Khanid hospitality, then please drop me a note.

Actually, going back to NOT being in cattle trading, Msr en Welle. I may keep a small household for light domestic duties, but one of the nicer parts of retiring is getting out of that business.

I shall probably be disconnected from this node in the next five hours or so, so I'll not be able to reply to any other messages. Thank you for your thoughts, all of you.

Istvaan, I used to feel much the same as you, but I find I even miss sweating these days.

Indicative of being ever the puppet master, it seems even the impact of the laws of gravity upon his person are not beyond the manipulations of Mr Shogaatsu.

And to Miss Mai.

In Intaki, we believe that it is not the destination that is important, but the path you walk to get there. I hope your path through the heavens before returning planetside have been of value to you as you prepare for the next step along your way.

Well said, Bataav. As the One says:

मानव जीवन का एक लंबा सफर है, आस् था के सबसे अच् छे साथियों की यह यात्रा पर आराम का होता है, और यह सबसे ज्यादा सम्पति

Let us never forget that.

Has she gone? Good riddance... Anyone else care to languish planetside? I'm establishing my merc training academy, assassinations could be their raison d'etre.

Disparaging a lady and captain who is no longer present to defend herself is disgraceful behavior.

Earth is a religious legend peddled by people that have lost hope in the human ability to solve our biggest problems. Humanity needs to move past ancient myths and embrace the reality of the present. Even if Earth did exist, it's not in any place that we can find. Even if we did find this place, it is doubtful that such a discovery would bring us the peace or the answers that people promise. It is most likely a deserted wasteland or a place hostile to any visitation from the four nations. Think: the Jove cannot reach Earth. Not even the finest Astrographers and Physicists in the galaxy can even make a dent in the question of Earth. What hope do we have?

Earth is also a synonym for "ground", I believe, sir.

It is, in fact, likely that we only call it earth because of its association with ground.

"We spring up from the earth"

I know that the Terra Hypothesis is not the first place I leap to when I hear the word.

It could also be a lazy word because it is one syllable shorter than Terra. Have to save those milliseconds!
