It's a click and select system.

As J'Poll recommends, you should really go through the tutorial, as it covers various ways of interacting and moving around space.

Aside from that, something that I've noticed is "non obvious" is the fact you can simply double-click anywhere in space (doesn't have to be on an object) to align your ship and speed towards that spot.

You do not "fly" the ship as in left, right, up down, faster, slower with a joystick or keyboard.

You are the captain, not the helms man. You sit back and give commands like "approach that object", "orbit that pirate", or perhaps even a "go that way".


So:
select an object and approach or orbit or open...

double click in empty space to head in that direction

ctrl-click (or click on the speed bar at the bottom of the HUD)

All of the above, plus, right-click is your friend. When in doubt, right click. Otherwise, click on a ship, wreck, gate, NPC, etc on you overview, then left click on the appropriate button on your Selected Items panel, all of which (Orbit, Align, Warp to, Keep at Range, etc) can be customized by right clicking.
