In the example bit there is a table with "Measured Signal Strength" and "inferred Base Signature Strength"

my question is, how do you get from measured to inferred?

Honestly, I don't know the math (and don't have time to play with it right now and answer the question) but other people do. For instance, try looking at St. Mio's rather wonderful guide. Input your base strength on your DSP (or core, or combat if you're using one of those instead) and it will spit out predicted strengths for various bands for you.

'Measured' is obviousely what you see in your scanner window (which is influenced by your skills/ship/gear, probe type and range, range of the probe to the signature and the base strength of the actual signature). This base strength is then 'inferred' from the measured number - i guess you could also say assumed or deduced.

Some clever people at some point noticed that certain type of signatures (for instance different classes of DED sites or wormholes) are harder to scan down than others. And they also noticed that one given type of signature (a DED 4/10 for instance) always scans the same way. So they assumed/postulated/theorized that signatures might actually be grouped in different 'difficulties' - what they later called 'bands'. They affirmed these suspicions by collecting lots of 'initial' scan data (the DSP probe at 256 AU) and then actually scanning down the signatures to see which type it turns out to be. [edit] Oh, yeah someone, i am pretty sure, also came up with a formula that describes all this.[/edit]

At least that's how i think it went down :). Personally i just sort of noticed that, say, a DED 4 always is around a certain percentage when i launch a probe and do a scan to see if there are any sigs ... and over a time i internalised these percentages without doing any math or scienctific deductions.

As stated above, most of the much older explorers came to learn this, as with many other exploration tricks on our own accord. Rather then having someone type out an all inclusive "How-To", the majority of the fun from exploration came from exploring and learning all the tricks and tips on our own.

Dear lord, please help me deal with the insufferable....

The answer to your question is described in the article called 'Signal Strength'
