I too disagree with the sentiment one shouldn't train up for SB's early in their carreer. Well, core skills are important for about any ship, as others have pointed out, and yes SB's are situational. Bombing comes with a little finesse but it isn't exactly rocket science.

With a proper Covops Cloaking Device (note: you will also need to invest SP in proper cloaking module requirements) you can pretty much move around with impunity throughout the entire universe. The Covops skill doesn't merely facilitate you with means to obliterate with brute force, it also allows you to pass gatecamps with relative ease. I do believe the advice was given in the spirit of adaptability above specialization, and with that I fully agree. Especially core skills are very important so you shouldn't neglect those.

The thing about SB's is that they are made out of paper. Ratting in them is possible abeit a warpfest and doesn't come recommended. It's just not a great ship to solo with. However, it has the ability to do tremendous damage VS large ships with bombs and you can even attend structure bashing if your bring your torpedoes. Since bombs can only be launched in nullsec and w-space (it is outlawed in Empire, which includes lowsec, and simply can't be used) this limits their optimal use to spaces inaccessable to new players. Wait, did I just say "inaccessable"? Blink

I think the key argument against covert-ops bombers as an initial goal is not that they are useless, but that they do require a fairly considerable specialisation into not only the covert-ops cloak, then the battleship class weapons, then the science skill heavy bomb launcher (could be wrong here and be confused with the pre-req's of the hictor bubble, heh); but after all that, to be effective and fit a tank generally also requires considerable investment in fitting skills.

The 30m skillpoints you could put into that ship alone could be better used to spread your available options and give you a broader sense of the ships available. I'm all for specialisation when you know exactly what you want to use but in practice, personally, I would favour a bit of variety and broad experience at the expense of effectiveness in a single class of ship with a heavily defined role.

Of course if you are sure bombers are your intention then by all means go for it, they are amazingly effective for their ISK cost and are fun to fly.
