Stargate SG-1. Although it went off track in the last seasons, was quite fun and the characters were quite enjoyaable. My favorite would be the episode when they tried to close a gate open to a black hole as the effects of it permeated into the base.

I often cite that episode as one of the greatest episodes of "pure sci-fi" ever created of any show. It's just one of those rare instances where the writers delivered a truly great idea really well.

My top 3:

1). BSG (new) - anyone who argues that the old BSG is better than the new one needs a beating just short of death
2). The X-Files - critics often refer to the 3rd season of this show as the 'greatest season of television ever'; and they just aren't wrong... It fell apart in the final season, but the 8th season is also one of its best. Obviously, the chemistry of the two leads played a big part
3). Babylon 5 - not much I can say that hasn't been said already, but this is proper sci-fi. Great premise, amazing characters, and great writing. My biggest complaint about the show, and the reason it's not #1 in my list, is that the bulk of the first season is so atrociously bad. The dialogue was ridiculous and some of the acting was terrible. If you survive till the end of season 1, you're in for a treat for the rest of the ride (I even mostly like the 5th season). This show has one of the worst first seasons of any show ever.

Honorable mentions:

DS9 - Alot of Babylon 5 geeks rail against DS9 for being a copycat, and they kinda did rip off B5...but honestly - DS9 did it very well with a larger budget and in a universe that most sci-fi geeks adore. So they can be forgiven.

Firefly - duh

Fringe - because once 2nd season starts and the whole "parallel universe" arc begins, it's just too damn cool to ignore.

Invasion (2004) - awesome Invasion of the Body Snatchers scenario set post-hurricane in the Florida everglades. And it has William Fichtner in it, and he rules.

I also liked Manny Coto's "Odyssey 5" that was on Showtime for 1 season then cancelled. Very cool concept and it had Peter Weller with a foul-mouthed southern accent.

I can think of worse series starts. But S1 still had highlights such as Babylon Squared. That episode would need to remain in the series somewhere, it's an important episode. Really, I liked S1 far better than S6. Main problem with S1 was just that they were so under funded. This started off as a wing and a prayer venture, and it should have had better funding for what it was.

I'm in it for the money

Cowboy Bebop: shuddup it counts.

Well, if we can throw in anime syfy.

1 Outlaw Star (hands down the best syfy anime ever.)
2 Trigun
3 Lensman
4 8th Man After (OVA series)

Notice how Cowboy Bebop isn't on this list. It's okay but it's not worth my top list of any sort.

if we are going anime...

then its got to be robotech... that show was the bomb!
