What would EvE look like with no jump gates?

If every ship had a jump drive and could set courses that put them approximately at their destination (better control via skill and equipmet) in a system how would this change EvE?

No more gate camping for one. People would have to know how to scan to find targets. Would "PvPers" be upset at having to use skill?

No more cool advertisements that you can interact with at the jump point. I am sure they would be missed.

No more Concord or Customs at gates. Smuggling viable...what!

Jump ships would be extremely viable for fleet actions. It would be the only way to ensure you jump in together.

And I would be curious what not worrying about gate camps would do for travel in low and high sec.

What do you think would happen?

The game would be less predictable and more dynamic. They would have to overhaul the scanning UI/mechanics so that it could be done while also doing other things. Using probes at this time is simply too labor intensive to do much else at the same time.

Take local out too while you are at it.

If it ended up like wormhole space, it would be pretty insane to map route to jita lol

So there you are :-)

There are good ships,

And wood ships,

And ships that sail the sea

But the best ships are Spaceships

I think he's talking about you just aiming a ship and 'jumping' there like in star trek or star wars or whatever

so really you and everyone else would take your freighter and point it from your corp/alliance's HQ system to jita and back risk free

and of course large null alliances will be able to deploy anywhere at maximum number from Omist to Deklein effortlessly

this seems like a bit of a compromise to appease the 'hate gatecamps crew'.

Now that you mention it, there's a game in development by the creator of Wing Commander and Freelancer that is almost exactly as you describe. To the point where new systems have to be charted and trail-blazed by explorers in the player base.

Same game with an advancement in technology. Or does the computer you play on take up a whole building?

And I still imagine ships jumping from system to system, not across systems, with the jump drives needing time to recharge for the next jump. While it recharges open the star map, get details on the target system and pick something to jump to in that system.

I am imagining it would lead to some truly "emergent" gameplay.

If stargates were removed:

- there would be no "bottlenecks" to create blockades and trap people... making system defense in 0.0 almost impossible and allowing trade to operate relatively unhindered... even in supposedly dangerous places.

- Warfare will center more on structures (like TCUs and plexes) and stations... which might breathe new life into SOV-type PvP (maybe not).

- "Roaming" PvP will become a thing of the past. With no quick way to locate ships and the ability to warp to the next system without needing to go through a bottleneck, catching and engaging targets of opportunity will be extremely rare.

- everyone would need to learn how to probe... or find and rely on someone who can.

- bubbles in 0.0 space will become useless unless they are spammed all over the grid (which, depending on the GM, can be listed as an exploit/"lag inducer" and will thus be removed).

Boring as there would be no chokepoints over which conflict would arise.

would be an awesome game

jump to systems and must to take a little time To initiate a warp to the next system ... and like in sci fi movies .. have to find your fuel so action will be transfert near station instead of gates.

etc etc

CCP it's time to remove Off Grid Boost and Put Them on Killmail too, add Logi on killmails .... Open that damn door !!

you shall all bow and pray BoB

I feel it would vastly improve the game. But it'll require a lot more changes. Scanning and D-scan would need a complete overhaul. To be fair, D-scan needs a complete overhaul anyway. Spamming a button every few seconds? When we're at the rear end of 2012? Really?!

To those saying it's the end of PvP, no choke points, etc., note that most MMOs have no such choke points and PvP in those games does not rely on gate camping. Some games to have NPCs around which players appear, good example being Age of Conan. But even in those games, "gate NPC" camping is fairly rare. And yet, PvP in those games is just fine without camping. PvP in games similar to EVE is also fine, such as Pirates of the Burning Sea, again with no such camping.

And with better travel and scanning, local can finally be removed. Local for me was always a bit of a joke. Eve is supposedly hard, unforgiving, etc., but not even the carebearest of carebear MMOs has the equivalent of local that informs you instantly and accurately about who's in the same zone with you, and provides you with detailed data about them. Always seemed supremely counter-intuitive to the whole "EVE is hard" claim. If the same mechanic was introduced in WoW, even those guys would be laughing their posteriors off.

Bottom line, I would be very much in favor of it. Though I recognize that from the technical side it would probably be the biggest change to EVE since launch, and thus will probably never happen. Not to mention there would be colossal opposition from people who are happy and content to sit outside the gate and hoping something will fall out they can munch on, and call it PvP.
