Old quote my prof back in uni used to come out with that a British general said back in the 1950s when talking to one of the American Brass.

The first Empire was America and the Caribbean, the second Empire covered 1/4 of the land on the planet.

Yeah? Said the American General. What about it?

The British General smiled. We have a saying that things come in threes. Lol

Always cracks me up.

I also notice that everyone whose posted is British.

Therefore I have to make the obligatory

/inbeforecolonials comment.

And when the hell have we ever invaded iceland? I doubt the Cod Wars count.

Winter War following the Bolshevik Revolution. We fought on the sides of the Whites. (The Russian Aristocracy) but the Reds won.

Also the Crimean War with Russia and The Great Game.

Britain was involved in the Crimean War, covers both Finland and Russia.

The blockade of the Gulf of Finland involved raiding the Finnish coast.

Should do, my grandmother was a history lecturer at the University of Bath, bed time stories consisted of dusty tomes on the campaigns of the British Empire.

Here's a better link than the MSN one.

Similar here. On my dads family we've been fighting for Crown and Country ever since the Civil War when we errr.... fought the Crown. What?

And as a very British wanton Imperialist sigh in knowing that in some alternative universe the map matches that of the Telegraph... and also that we still use airships....

Oh a man can dream.

I still wish there was national service. Dad was in the Grenadiers so was my uncle, grandfather, great uncle etc etc back to the Crimean. Before that it was the Gloucester regiment.

I wanted to sign up but my dad said it was a waste of time since I became eligible just before Iraq. So I did service with the army of the nation I currently reside in.

Not sure how many generations but the line goes back to this most awesome of chaps.

Brits had some little bit of troops in Russia during Russian Civil War (1917-1921). They were stationed in Odessa on Black Sea and probably some in Vladivostok on Pacific Ocean.

Ah, I see Argentina isn't on the list of the uninvaded! Does that mean Britain admits the Falklands belong to Argentina? Smile

Since they came out of the ocean, the Falklands have always belonged to Britan.

The natives came to the Falklands and realized they were on her majesties land and sent their tax in a bottle to Britan.

Also, I propose they invade vatican city next.

We attacked Argentina in the Napoleonic Wars when it was a colony of the kingdom of Spain. Argentina has never owned the Falklands.
