They're out of gas. I saw video of gas lines 5 miles long!

Food shortage. New Yorkers dumpster diving for food!

Frustration builds. People afraid to go out at night, fleeing the city if they can.

Flood waters poison. Water laced with deadly E.Coli bacteria!

Serious damage. Estimated cost $50 Billion.

Digging out and looking to leadership. Obama off to Las Vegas!

I just checked all this out in Australia.

I saw 3 photos.

2 of cars driving - 1 on the shoreline and 1 on a flooded street.
1 of people standing near a beach "playing".

I watched a video of a crane boom falling with hundreds of people on the street.

And I asked wtf were you thinking??!?!?!

People cannot be THAT stupid, surely? And yet..... Shocked

^^ what these morons CAN'T FIGURE OUT is SOMEONE ELSE has to rescue them if things go pear-shaped.

Oh yeah, they are that stupid. Smile You should have seen the number of car crashes the day before the storm came. All of the hoarders out driving around like aggressive arsehats, ignoring basic traffic rules and basic common sense.

Then after the storm, when all the traffic signals were out, more crashes at the intersections. Because people pretend they're just driving past the line, then when they get to the front, they wedge their car into any gap in the line they can find. And now PVP at the gas pump lines. The station owners won't open the lines unless there's a cop around to referee things. Ugh

Some images of affected people spontaneously turning into communists.

There's even a doctor offering free medical care! What is the world coming to?

Ugh

We lost 9 or so people in a bushfire in South Oz years back - most died doing exactly what they were told not to do - drive through it to escape.

There was a huge inquiry about what went wrong etc. Fed government changed the way warnings went out and mounted a massive campaign to educate people in bushfire areas and what to do BEFORE a fire - particularly what to do on HIGH PROBABILITY DAYS.

And yet, in Victoria a few years ago, almost 200 people died. Had they actually bothered to recognise, understand and respond to the danger properly the toll would have been much, much less.

Too many people are more worried about being seen as "chicken" during emergencies or too lazy to be proactive in case something goes wrong. The old, "it won't happen to me" defense. Sad but true.

I see 90+ is the toll to date and still climbing. Among them 2 young boys swept away by floodwaters. Given the warnings posted days ahead, you've got to ask how? I hear of quite a few people were killed by falling trees. In a hurricane? How?

Yes there are accidents in storms. The question is which accidents were avoidable?

Hindsight is utterly useless to you when you are dead.

Having been through several disasters, some particualrly vicious, the help given by some before, during and after is astonishing mate. Not just volunteer rescue people, but neighbours, friends and family.

It can bring whole communities and peoples together. We forget the differences and share in the grief. Makes you wonder why we are not like that..... nah... not gonna happen..

And doctors, heard of Médecins Sans Frontières? They do it all the time.

Checking in from Newport News, Virginia.

I can see the coast from my apartment window. The winds were pretty rough. It ripped street lights off from their hanging wires. On multiple occasions they had to be dragged out of the street because it was blocking traffic. Many many signs were ripped from their foundations and tossed around (to be fair, I attribute that to shoddy construction).

My car, which was parked on the street, drifted about ten feet down the street due to high and fast moving water. Still works fine though. I didn't witness the damage directly on the coastline, but the aftermath looks bad. I think it was mostly on the coastline here in Virginia that got hit hard. Anyone that was at least a mile inland was left mostly unscathed.

Hmmm... well amidst the outcry, Bloomberg gave in and canceled the Marathon for tomorrow. Silly NY'ers wanted the focus on things like recovering bodies and letting the police contribute to the recovery efforts rather having them all wrapped up in supporting a sporting event that could be postponed. He was saying how he wanted the marathon to restore a sense of normalcy, ...while they f-ing pull bodies of dead children out of the water today. Obama on photo op in Ohio.

From the people, yeah. I mean not everyone was out playing on the beach before the storm or trying to push a sporting event within a week of the worst storm to hit the area. Think as if something like this hit your area, and you were counting on local and state/federal governments to do their jobs. We have had bad dealings with just FEMA, total failure in the past and failures happening even now.
