Thoughts on a new computer

My current computer is dying a slow death and needs to be replaced. I used this guide (the $750 one) as a base to start from.

Rosewill CHALLENGER-U3 Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case $39 (after 20 dollar off promo code)

ASUS 24X DVD Burner $19

Antec NEO ECO 400C 400W 80 PLUS Certified $44

ASRock B75M-GL LGA 1155 Intel B75 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard $59

G.SKILL Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 $38

Intel Core i3-3220 Ivy Bridge 3.3GHz LGA 1155 55W Dual-Core Desktop Processor BX80637i33220 $129

SAPPHIRE 100355-1GOCL Radeon HD 7850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 Video Card OC Version $179

513.93 +tax (there is about $40 in discounts and rebates that I did not show.)

Notes:

Have a new SSD that was going to use to prop up the old comp as well as other HDD to use for storage.

Case is a case, same with the DVD drive.

Don't see much reason atm for more then 8gigs.

Power supply was the one recommended in the guide. 400w seems a bit low but newer components are more energy efficient and the PS itself is more efficient too.

Motherboard, SLI/crossfire not important to me. As an old timer I am not comfortable without a PIC expansion slot. How well it supports the Ivy bridge I don't know.

RAM... is ram. 1600mhz and has a 5 dollar off promo, works for me.

CPU. Bottom end Ivy Bridge. Was thinking of saving money and getting the Intel Pentium G870 Sandy Bridge 3.1GHz for $89 saving some money loosing hypertheading and having system RAM run at 1333 instead of 1600. Not sure it is worth it.

GPU. 1 gig RAM is enough, I use a 1680x1050 screen (and prefer it) and 2 gig's is overkill at that resolution. Was thinking of saving money with a 7770 but, feel the 7850 has more legs.

Sticking with Newegg with purchase, have always done me well and I get the bonus of being able to do Will Call at the their warehouse since I live close enough. Don't have to pay for shipping and can pick up that day.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks,

A 2GB GTX 660 (non-Ti) for ~230$ (maybe even less with rebates) would probably be a better overall choice.
The extra RAM would be great for very high antialiasing levels at your selected resolution, or for later on if you decide to add an extra monitor (or two extra monitors), or if you want to use extreme texture resolutions in newer games, or any combinations of the above.

The 660 is still faster in most games at stock speeds than a heavily OCed 7850, while only having a TDP of 140W (so also only needing one 6-pin power connector if purchasing a reference / non-overclocked / stock speed model).

The 7850 stock speed TDP is 130W, and OCed versions TDP depending on overclock value.
The one you linked needs 2 6-pin PCI-E power connectors, so the TDP is very likely over 150W.
The core is overclocked ~5%, the RAM is overclocked ~20%, so the power draw should be at least 155W, probably as high as 165W.

Look here.... Newegg

And learn here... Newegg TV

I could barely turn on a computer and after watching this series, comparing prices and deals from EVERYWHERE else, I purchased every single part and built my own. It is all, tab "A" into slot "B".

This is one of the best places to get everything you need.

My personal advice...Don't try to skimp, by getting the cheapest. By that I mean the lesser performance. Spend as much as you can. I spent 1400 and wished I had spent 600 more.

Hope this helps. At least It gives you another avenue to browse.
