I am wondering just cause I used to play this game...Well about 6 years ago? Well maybe longer or less I can not remember for the life of me but saw it has one server when I was sure there used to be multiple but I can understand merges. I am only on trial at this moment but was thinking of actually paying to play again but did not want to make a mistake.

Also races dont matter other than starting skill sets in different ships right? I picked Minmatar just for the fact heard they are better for pvp sooner than the rest?

Nup! Eve has always been just one server, well two if you count the test server. Numbers seem to be pretty steady at the moment with around 35-40k on-line at peak times. Like any game Eve ebbs and flows.

Things have been a little quieter then normal for a couple of months, but (in some none UK parts of the world it's been summer) and there have been a couple of new games that folks will have drifted off to try.

You'll see a bit of a spike again in December when the new expansion comes into play.

But no, Eve is pretty stable player wise at the moment

Thanks, Well I guess I will finish the trial before I actually consider paying as just been so long since I played last, I will probably just pick the race I like best then I just found a forum with 50 million different opinions. Thanks again.

Eve is definitely not dying, it has always been a single shard server, there are other servers, china has its own and there a couple of test servers but the main one is where all the action is.

I would encourage you to sub, Eve is one of the few MMOs that grows it's subscriber base year on year.

Race used to matter to a certain extent, these days though all races start of with the same basic stats and race specific skills, Minmatar are not known as Winmatar for nothing when it comes to PvP Lol

There's nothing to stop you cross training into other races stuff at a later date if you feel inclined to do so.

If you have any questions related to being a noob, search first and if you can't find what you're looking for ask away, here we'll go out of our way to help noobs that ask meaningful and sensible questions.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Eve is very special. CCP has this concept of the "future vision" and basically its a philosophy and goal to make eve an all encompassing science fiction experience. They want us to be able to do anything we want--within reason. They listen to the community and build the game around what we want and it's constantly and consistently improving. I can almost imagine eve still being around in 10 years, barely resembling itself, but still being one of the most astonishing experiences in the gaming world. Eve isn't going anywhere, and don't hold your breath for eve 2 because I don't see that happening. They've already completely revamped the graphics and just about everything else in the game.

Edit: Point I was trying to make is Eve isn't dying, it's just getting started!

I'm not going to touch on the EVE is diein bit but as for Race,

Race only helps with getting you started and which basic skills you have when you start. After that as a few have said you can cross train into any other race that you want. So you aren't limited to just one race which I find greatly beneficial as it allows you to become flexible in what you want to do :)

Look at the dates on those forum posts.
Race selection has become almost purely cosmetical these days, the differences between starting points are literally hours apart in skill training time and the difference in skill costs for any different focus are minimalistic even for a 1-day newbie.

EVE has been dying since I started playing 3 years ago. I expect EVE will be dying for another decade or more.

[i.e. EVE is not really dying, and continues to expand in subscribers.]

Everyone now starts with the same skills, so looks are more important now. You can train for any ship, so if you want to be Minmatar and pilot Gallente ships, that is fine. There are no penalties or disadvantages for doing so.

The only difference is racial turret 3 and racial frigate 2, which takes very little time to train for any other race.

Starting Skills
Electronics 3 (8,000)
Engineering 3 (8,000)
Shield Operation 2 (1,415)
Gunnery 2 (1,415)
Small [Racial] Turret 3 (8,000)
Mining 2 (1,415)
Mechanic 2 (1,415)
Navigation 3 (8,000)
Science 3 (8,000)
Spaceship Command 3 (8,000)
[Racial] Frigate 2 (2,829)

Total = 8,000 * 6 + 1,415 * 4 + 2,829 = 56,489

You cannot make any assumptions about EVE dying or not, based on the number of servers, because EVE has always been a three-server game: One test server, one server for Chinese players, and one regular server for worldwide playes.

As for choice of race and background, it affects your starting skillz very slightly. It used to be you got around 800k skill points based on your choices, so that mattered quite a lot, but now you get so little that it really makes no sense to choose Minmatar for that reason. Whatever skillz Minmatar starts the game with can be trained in 2-3 weeks by anyone else. The reason for this is that it takes almost no time to train the low levels of skillz.

The first level might take a minute, 2nd level might take 5-6 minutes, 3rd level might take an hour, 4th level might take 5-6 hours, 5th level might take a day and a half. (That's for Rank 1 skillz. Rank 2 skillz take twice as long, Rank 10 skillz take 10 times as long, and so forth.)

Race and perhaps background affects two other things: What your avatar looks like, and your attributes, but you're going to re-map your attributes anyway.

Some players do elaborate long-term plans where they first optimize two attributes and train skillz dependent on those, then they re-amp to optimize the two other attributes (everyone ignores the fifth, Charisma) and spend about a year training skillz dependent on that attribute, then they go back and optimize for the first two again, and so forth.

That's extremely efficient, but I've opted instead for the freedom of only re-mapping once. I dump Charisma as low as I can, and distribute my remap points as evenly as possible between the other four attributes. This means I train less efficiently, measured in average skill points per day, but that I have total and absolute freedom to change my mind regarding what I want to train, any time, as often as I want.

Another EVE is dying thread...

Maybe we should all abandon ship and make a run for the hills.

Heads up, from someone who's native speech isn't English, it's skills, not skillz. Typing it in your way makes you look like a 10 year old.

Partially incorrect.

All players start with the same attributes.

20 perception

Eve is not dying.

As for race, it doesn't matter much. Here is something that does matter:

Do yourself a huge favor and focus on gunnery rather than missiles.

Gunnery support skills apply to even "gun" weapon type in the game. This includes Hybrids, Projectiles, and Lasers. Missile support skills apply only to missiles.

Eves not dying, if anything its more vibrant then ever. Winter expansion is just around corner to hit us with new stuff to do.

Only thing to make eve skyrocket even bigger succcess, would be solve mystery of high early player churn (most quit this game before 2 months is up) Cry Eves learning cliff is now easyer then it was 4 years ago, but its still there. And not that many have rock climing:5 trained.

I have been in this game since 2008... And most expansions have brought more fun stuff to do for me. Ok, i do like more challenging game then your usuall mmo offers. And EvE has been to me like drugs to addict. I had played 2 days of trial originally and then i subcribed allready. Havent miss a day since.

Thanks to my wife for sugesting this game for me "I think you might like it....".

We are Minmatar, Our ship are made of scraps, but look what our scraps can do...

This may have been answered, but race skills only matter to what small weapon skill, and frigate skill you start with. Either way, race doesn't dictate much of anything. Unless you role-play a bunch. Then it kinda matters.

EVE will live on. This is a given.

I don't always do shit. But when I do, it's usually worth doing.
