"Cloaking Behind Enemy Lines" by J. D. Miller

Hydrostatically suspended in an utterly insignificant point, in what had to be the most worthless region in the Galaxy, floated ensign Zekashi Hiro, or “Zero” as the other capsuleers in his alliance called him.
His mind was elsewhere. After all, there was little reason for it to stay. Though he was on assignment deep within enemy territory, his duty required neither his action nor his attention. He also had nothing to fear. Tucked safely and invisibly behind the cloaking device of his Manticore class covert ops frigate, Zero had nothing to worry about, and nothing to do but think.
His job was simple; be there. He was being used to implement a form of psychological warfare employed by his alliance. The enemy would know he was there due to the CONCORD jump gate technology that betrays the presence and identities of all pilots in a given system, but the synchronized light-bending technology of his cloak made it impossible to scan him down.
As you might imagine, this is maddening for the enemy, but can also inflict real harm on their economy, logistics and infrastructure. It seeds unrest, uneasiness, and insecurity. The locals have no choice but to assume that the enemy has eyes on them at all times (even though Zero was currently daydreaming and not giving a damn about what they were up to). People are afraid to mine, afraid to attend to any industrial complexes they might have on the planets, afraid to defend their system from encroaching pirate factions that creep in from DED space pockets. All for fear that lowly Zero is lurking near-by in who knows what kind of ship.
But much greater than the affect it has on the enemy economy is the affect it has on morale. The few capsuleers unfortunate enough to live in the system must deal with Zero’s presence 24/7, some stop by just to swear at him in the local comm channel, and it’s not unheard of for an enemy capsuleer to decide he can’t take it anymore and abandon his alliance all together.
Little did they know they had little need to fear Zero directly, his mission was to sit still. He wasn’t told for how long, only that at some point he would receive orders to light his cynosural beacon, punching a hole in space-time through which will pour an armada hell-bent on killing anything in the system not flying their flag. But Zero knew that wouldn’t be for some time, and he had nothing to do but wait and think.
“How long have I been at this?” he wondered unconsciously calling up the ship’s chronometer to inform him of the date, which he unconsciously repeated in his mind:
“October 4th, YCC 114… Over a week…”
The realization that it may be several more days before he gets out of this made him sigh within his capsule. He hated this duty with a passion, and it wasn’t the first time he had been assigned it. His goddamned C.O. had deemed him “good at it”. He scoffed within his mind.
“Some compliment. All you need for this job is a cloak, a cyno, and a pulse.”
He hated this goddamned assignment and the son of a ***** who dropped it in his lap.
It wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t for the loneliness. He was under strict orders to refrain from even using his secure comms. It seemed that some nastiness involving a talkative cloaker and alliance spies had resulted in an intel leak. No, he had to float there and keep to himself, without even the luxury of a view, as the "safe spot" he occupied was deliberately removed from any noteworthy celestial object.

“God, I miss Miharu.”
His lonesome mind had wandered to the thought of his latest romance, a carrier pilot with auburn hair and more tattoos than a proper Deteis woman should have. He longed for her. She made him feel almost human again.
Though he hadn’t known her long, their experiences together had been memorable, the sex and the battles. He loved being in a fleet with her. She was majestic, commanding such a powerful machine with such grace, dealing decimation like some sort of sexy hurricane.
His lustful reverie was tempered somewhat by the realization that the woman he’d been sleeping with had died in the latest capital engagement, meaning that the clone who took her place would be missing that lovely auburn hair.
Come to think of it, he’d died since then too. His lip curled into a smile to think that the next time they see each other would be kind of like the first time.
There were other things he missed about combat beside sexy capital-pilots. You wouldn’t know it by the crap assignments he’s given, but Zero was never more in his element than when he was in a large-scale engagement with the enemy. In combat, Zero was relentless, and a surgeon with 425 mm’s. Most of all he missed combat because it was something to do.
He remembered his first real battle, nothing had gone right and he was lucky to escape with his pod. Other times, he wasn’t so lucky.
Being pod-killed is an inherently inhuman experience. All the flight school training, psych evaluations, and simulations in the world could never come close to preparing you to be separated from the flesh you were born in.
Zero’s first death and resurrection was more traumatic than he’d ever let his alliance-mates know. The feeling of being drawn away from his own brain and cast across the Galaxy like an intangible rag-doll, landing in a cold room under a bright light, an less than empathetic mechanical voice asking invasive questions. The experience had stuck with Zero for some time. Afterward he’d found himself struggling with a reluctance to inflict such a thing on others.
“When did that stop bothering me?” he asked himself.
“Now I don’t even think twice…” he realized that he’d long since lost track of how many lives he’d ended in a similar fashion. He blamed detachment. All seasoned capsuleers struggle with it. The longer you spend in that egg, the further you are removed from the rest of humanity. He figured that detachment is just a tool pod-pilots use to maintain their sanity. They may try to remedy it by banding together into tight-knit alliances with their own brand of camaraderie and even their own culture, but sooner or later they find that they're losing their grip on what it meant to be mortal.
“They tell us when we join that we’ll be demi-gods, but I don’t remember being asked if that’s alright with me…”
He snapped himself out of it by willing the passive scanner to run yet again: No change.
“These boring mother-*******.”
He hated the enemy for having things to do, people to talk to. He suddenly wanted to crack their pods. It was their fault he had this assignment. If they hadn’t dug so deeply into this good for nothing system his alliance’s sub-cap fleet would have trounced through here long ago.
This whole region was worthless. Crap for rarity moons, no riches to plunder, no real strategic advantage. The alliance brass just wanted to see their flag flying over it.
Another system diagnostic: All green.
He missed his childhood pets. The life of an immortal starship pilot is not very accommodating to dogs or cats. He wished he could bring something along with him to keep him company.
“Maybe a fish! He could swim around in my pod… Nah, that’s crazy. Then I’d have to make the fish immortal too, who knows how much that would cost…”
Run the scanner/Run the scanner/Run the scanner…
He began to wonder if he was losing his mind.

“I think I need a change of scenery.” He thought as he willed his warp drive into action and scooted a few AU’s to another equally insignificant point in space. The system’s star was just a bright miniscule point, but a nicely ringed planet was now in view. Zero liked looking at the rings and the little dust-speck moons lazily orbiting.
His mind drifted again to the enemy.
“They hate me, I know they hate me, why wouldn’t they?” Zero wasn’t feeling well.
“I’m in their home and I won’t go away, I’m like an infestation!” Zero brought up his comms and linked with the local channel.
“Why do you hate me so much?!? What did I ever do to you?!? Don’t you know I’m just on assignment? I don’t wanna be here!”
There was no response. Zero screamed inside his head and quickly drew up a private comm-link with his lover.
“Miharu!”
“What the hell are you doing Zero?” she responded, visibly aggravated.
“Miharu, baby…” he pleaded.
“No comms while on cloaker duty! You know goddamn well when-“
“I missed you!” he interjected.
“Look baby, you can't have fish in your pod-"
"What the hell are you on about?" she barked.
"Baby listen!"
"Stop calling me that! We're on duty! It's lieutenant-"
"Their cognitive states won't transfer!" he howled. Miharu's demeanor softened from that of fury to concern.
"Ar-are you okay? Im going to have command pull you out of there. Just hold tight and-" She was interrupted by a proximity alarm. It would seem that in his duress, Zero had disregarded his cloaking device. Looming overhead were several enemy battlecruisers locking him up. He just gazed up at them, not afraid, simply in awe of the beautifully efficient killing machines. One salvo of missiles was enough to shatter his little frigate. A last ditch attempt to escape in his pod was met by the all too familiar "External forces are preventing your warp." More enemy ships arrived to get in on the kill, and bidding farewell to this form, Zero resigned himself to oblivion.

An original, entering into the canon category, written the day the fiction contest was announced. Constructive criticism welcome.

Inspired by all the hatred for afk cloakers.

Thank god for youtube. Poor Zero, he's got a real spaceship but no broadband. :(

Give a man a match and you warm him for a day.

Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life!
