As forums go, EVE is what every other PvP forum is x 1000.
Elitist, bullshit.

As for subscriptions being down, maybe but that has little to do with the vitriolic nature of EVE. Subs compared to other MMO's is a product of the hateful nature of EVE but Subs down is the product of Nerfing out SP that people have trained or game content people have moved to. It feels like bait and switch when someone drops billions or hundreds of billions translating to alot of their time, only to get told that won't be working the way it did when you started the venture. No it doesn't help that those people come to the forums and get fanboi trolled but CCP are a little too eager to wail away with that nerf bat and they always have been. Not once has a ship that took a nerf gotten a buff to balance that nerf. Not once.

Yup. Even nerfing something innocuous like DataCores...and in fact the entire Faction Warfare DEBACLE.

I seriously want my R&D Skill Points back, but that just ain't gonna happen.

It's entirely the fault of CCP for celebrating things like scams and ganks so frequently over the years. It sends a message to the community that such behavior isn't just allowed, but the way the game is meant to be played.

You've got all these noobies running around thinking mining and industry isn't a legitimate part of the game, and only people who PvP or scam are playing the game properly. So whenever someone mentions something without that same bias they get shouted down.

Totally support this post.

I have played a lot of games and contributed to there forums in a positive way (in my opinion) abuse/trolling has always been a problem on any forum but can normally be sorted out by the community and by the golden rule - Do not feed the trolls.

However Eve Is unique in that we have trolls feeding trolls like a snake eating itself for nourishment an endless cycle of abusive trolling.

You are not alone in disgust, It almost put me off playing eve altogether. It’s a good job the forum only represents a fraction of a percent of the player base as in game I have met some logical, smart and friendly people willing to help, none of them use the forum and all have communicated the same sentiments you have shown.

The real eve forum is in the game.

Since then i have been here, through thick and thin, ever loyal, ever here, ever supporting CCP in there ideals on what EvE should be. We are still here.

About 6 months ago the very same friend who, that one night, showed me the epic game that is the harshness of EvE, asked me "do you, use the forums at all?" I laughed and said "no mate, i have heard far to much, shall we say negative reports about the forums" he chortled and said "yeh, it's ten times worse now". I shrugged and kept pounding the Vindicator pirate who was stupid enough to attack three mach's in syndicate camping a gate.

I then 4 days ago decided to actually check out the forums. I finally rolled a Caldari alt and wanted some info so i had a look around. i saw this forum and thought, could be interesting, so i stopped hunting faction fitted idiots and looked here for a few days.

Disgust doesn't even begin to describe what i am feeling right now, i am no stranger to *smack talk* or *trolling* but the level of abuse/trolling on this forum is beyond reprehensible and has left me feeling some what, shaken about what EvE has become. My concern is that CCP seems unconcerned about what this. We all know there is a drop is players and activity in Null Sec, it is harder for me and my friends to get fights in a small group, we have never joined an alliance or corp, we have always had our own. I have a very real concern that CCP really doesn't care.

Or at the very least, should make the forums only viewable by paying accounts. I applaud CCP for there harsh world, i love it, but the forums are not harsh, they are without feeling and hostile. This needs to be addressed.

Anyway, i just wanted to post this, Ive never posted anywhere before so. Hope i did right. I did adhere to the custom of using an alt to post aswell

So if I understand you right, you love the game of EVE for the most part of those 10 or so years you played it.
But then a odd day in October 2012, you decide to read the forums and instantly have a concern that CCP doesn't care... ?

TBH I have no idea what you are trying to say with this post.

I believe my question to this would be, is that wise? Does this really reflect what we, as EvE Online gamers, are really like?

I believe the answer is no. It does not.

That, is the shame.

I have no trouble being civil and courteous, I have trouble with people telling me I need to be civil and courteous. In fact I start forgetting to be civil and courteous when people start telling me to be civil and courteous.

I have trouble with people telling other people what they should/should not say based on their own sense of morality or the belief they "know what's best".

WOWSERISM - "Wowser" refers to a person who seeks to deprive others of behaviour deemed to be immoral or "sinful".

Just like the movies, the internet and forums. There is an OFF switch, use it.

This is totally removed from CCP forums or ANY forum where a VIRTUAL PERSON is trolled, defamed or whatever.

Only when it becomes REAL is it an issue for ANY service provider.

Let's NOT go down this road. Let's NOT even consider this. Period.

We are AVATARS.

This is a pretty awesome thread.

Like the OP, I'm a 10 year EVE Veteran.

I've always been very vocal on the forums, albeit a lot more in my earlier EVE career. I recently joined the Community Team here at CCP, and the forums are something that we're looking to tackle and clean up now that we have a good sized group to work with.

So, I'll tell you a story.

Back in 2003 we had a division of our ISD volunteer team called CRC, (The Communications Relay Committee). They were responsible for moderating the official EVE Online forums, and I was part of them when I was a player along with several other people who now work for CCP, some with Community and some in other places. We spent several years making sure the forums were relatively clean and tidy, and things were going well with the community back when we had a lot less subscribers and there was a lot less forum traffic.

When the Community team was first formed in 2007 (I believe I posted this as 2005/2006 in the moderation thread but recently had it clarified as I couldn't remember fully), ISD CRC was disbanded and the forum moderation responsibly was passed over to the Devs within Community, some of whom came over from the volunteer team to work for CCP.

Due to the workload on the Community Devs taking care of so many players, it always seemed to me as a player that the forums were less moderated, which in most instances wasn't exactly a bad thing, but sometimes people pushed the rules and got used to bending them a lot more, and in some instances breaking them without reprieve.

So fast forward to now, and the EVE community has grown massively. We now have a new ISD Team called CCL who are responsible for the forums that we're training and growing to take the place of what CRC used to be. The problem that we have at present is that the people who joined after CRC was disbanded are used to getting away with a lot more on the forums, and now we have a new team in place to keep them tidy, there's been a few clashes of ideals.

We're slowly settling them in, and for the best part, CCL are doing an awesome job. That said, there's always room for improvement and we take everyone's concerns on board and look toward making sure they're addressed.

Right now, I think the whole of the Community Team are in agreement that the general state of the forums and the posting quality here is on the up. Things are looking good for the future, but they do need more work and we're actively encouraging other developers to get involved in discussions and speak to the player base.

It's just a matter of getting those who frequent them into the habit of good posting, and things should be a whole lot better. P

Hiya, just had a nap :)

I'm glad of most of the responses here, they have given me some good insight on how the forums in this game have gone/shaped in the last few years.

Which of course helps me understand, some of the hate/hostile behavior i have been reading. I also want to thank the Dev for responding here and explaining what CCP are going to be doing. That is very much appreciated and does alleviate my concerns that you are doing everything you can to clean up the forums.

Thank you to all for reading and responding, much appreciated.

The forums represent the game. I think some people forget that

You are 100% correct, sir. Forums do represent their respective games.
I believe one of the first things I've done in every game, is go to the forums to find out information...and promptly spent hours reading a substantial part of the troll threads. X

Now if we could get all the younger generation players to come to the forums, we might just get rid of 90% of the suicide ganking in highsec! They'd all get too caught up in trolling the forums to pay attention to the game. Cool

For the record. Most of the "hate" and "hostility" is PART of the game. You do get that don't you?

In fact, many of the people on these forums are good friends in RL as well as VR and much of the "hostility" is actually friendly rivalry like you might do with mates on a Saturday night.

There are some that get serious I agree, but they get trounced pretty easily. After all, the people posting may be avatars here but the bits caressing the keys are still, you know, people...

TL:DR To understand the entire conflagaration one might call Eve-O, you gotta play the game. Then it all makes sense Blink
