I think a big part of it is that the nature of most people in EVE is to not give out information since info you have that your opponent has gives you an edge.
this means that instead of sharing useful info on the forums, most people just end up trolling cos they need their forum fix.

As another 2003 vet, I agree with the op the forums especially GD are overwhelming negative, the game can feel a bit like that these days as well. Sad

I've only just starting popping in here myself... I play alot of Halo, and USED to join the the Bungie forums there for various topics. As far as I can tell, this is nowhere near as bad as that was. Not even close. But I've only been posting here for a few days, and I've only made a few posts.

I have found that these forums are a good spot to stop by to contemplate the thoughts of other players and figure out their mentalities. When you know who you're dealing with based on maturity levels, you know what conversations to join and which ones to just outright avoid. Arguments about K/D ratings on the Halo board were so far beneath me, but you couldn't find a post without one - a random thread about colour customisation on Spartan armour for Reach would eventually devolve into an argument about K/D. It's definitely different here, but I think there is about the same amount of whinging. Some legitimate concerns, but also lots of whinging.

But you'll find that anywhere.

I've been online gaming since Acoustic coupled modems and MUD's that were only available, when as far as the managers were concerned their company computer was on 'over night maintenance' running 'Communications soak tests' Big smile

I would have been an EVE veteran if I hadn't been so penny pinching and decided not to update my PC at the time and bought one of these new fangled 3D Graphics cards! Cry

So I agree with the OP to a certain extent

Over the years I seen many a game forum.

In general I find game forums collect the following types of poster:

  • I need help with X problem, genuine plea
  • I need help with Y problem, but I am to lazy to do it myself
  • The hardcore fan, the company is always right, even if they did start WWIII
  • It's all going to Die, because of XY&Z!
  • The Company is wrong and I know what is best for this game!
  • I hate this game, but wont say why or leave!
  • Lurkers (like me who just like observing how idiotic some people can be when they think they are anonymous)

There are plenty of others, but as long as nothing dramatic happens, like the Game is shutting or an update that did Genuinely upset the majority of players who never visit a Game Forum, Star Wars Galaxies Combat Update, EVE's Incursion!

Overall though Game Forums represent a very small percentage of the total number of players!

Why!

You have to remember most game companies (US Games especially) want consumers (Sheep who buy & play the game and say nothing)

The one thing any company hates are Fanatics from record companies to game companies FANS are the 5% to 10% of their consumers that take most of their time to control or remove!

As a result most other Game Forums (US Games especially)
Are sops to the FANS, companies provide them as it means they don't have to deal with individually, they can be herded into a coral & left to rant & rage, with severe moderation!

They are thrown an occasional bone every now and then and PR sometimes gather a few of the more presentable ones and uses them for an advertising stunt!

But that is all they do!

Some companies overtime end up with a major problem when the FANS are all they have left, EverQuest etc.

Then they have to do the Star Trek manoeuvre of divide them into Trekkers (Those who grew up with ST and now have large disposable incomes to tap) & Trekkies (Those fanatics that still need controlling, so they don't destroy the Trekker gravy train)

But again that is all they do!

EVE Online is the one major exception!

They have embraced their fans both Good & Bad and listen to them on, CSM, these Forums, Third Party Forums Open Test Servers!
The result is that, even allowing for ballot box stuffing Lol, a large proportion of the players are active in EVE's survival

But this does mean you do see the extremes of the bell curve of human nature on the forums!

Recently with the up and coming laws on Trolling in the UK and court cases else where in the world CCP have now increased the policing of the more fruity style of posters.

That said the EVE forums these and third parties are still far more entertaining than watching paint dry, which is all you get in a lot of other game forums!

But as the OP says, there is smack talk, which when done well is highly entertaining and there is being juvenile obnoxious just because you can!

CCP are the exception they do listen to their FANS & players and they do give a huge amount of feedback. Hopefully they may have even learnt from their mistakes (Unlike SWG)

For that they do deserve a better quality of Forum Poster!

As for me I will go back to lurking and enjoying the latest Goon based Excitement or Alliance implosion!

One last observation! Yes CCP is a Company and Yes they do understand Fans need controlling just like any other company. They just do it a lot better than most Twisted

You're using the forums the wrong way - I think GD is a great place to check if you want to read something totally stupid.

4-5 good posters aside, It offers a unique combination of genuine whining, blatant trolling and a moderation team that obviously requires lack of common sense and reading comprehension as a prerequisite to be accepted.

Not the worst forum I've been on... but it's up there. Just get really tired of "ohh STFU you're just so-and-so's alt."

For a game that tries to be more mature, there sure as hell are a lot of immature little ****s on this forum.

Personally I think the problem is not so much agression and unpleasantness as a very low tolerance for 'teh stoopid' along with a very loose definition of what that actually is.

Combine that with sections of the forums which are basically designed for people to troll each other in (CAOD and C&P are primary offenders here) and you get the rather heady mix we have today.

I can sum up your entire thread in one line, "horrified older man who believed that he was playing a game for mature people"

GD is a cesspit, but you are not looking at it correctly. Look at the other channels and they are pretty much troll free as they have a point. I troll on GD all the time but never on other channels and there are a lot of people like me.

See it as forum Pew.

Also the majority of people never read the forums or have any interest in it

Lastly if people ask honest questions that need a definative answer they normal get them with no trolling.
I dont normally troll, but when i do i do it on General Discussion.

I totally agree with you OP.
But for me, it's even more frightening, because through that i see how humans tend to become more and more decadent in our real world.
I'm a roleplayer, and i can see the fun to play a decadent character.
But these forums are not about roleplay. It's directly the humans behind the keyboard who behave this way.
Oh of course there are nice and respectful people too, happilly. But i get more disheartened each time i attempt to be involved into EVE's community through the forums. For one correctly built and thought post there is litterally dozens of stupid posts.
It's not only EVE, ok, but i think that by not doing much about it, CCP is mixing in character harsh ambiance and demagogy/lazyness. I admire the ISD for dedicating their time trying to keep this mess a bit clean... I would have given up since long...
Thinking that people have nothing more creative and interesting to do of their life than writting such rubbish on a forum is truely breaking my heart.
I suppose than they do that out of frustration, because they can't really let their agressivity off steam in their real life, so they do it on internet, protected by their anonymity.
I have no idea how to change that. I have so much fun doing stuff, playing, learning... i would consider a uncredibly silly waste to use my energy in such a way... and i would really feel ashamed. But that's just me, and i don't await that my posts change anything here, for they will just laugh at these words and unleash even more their urge to dirty everything.

Well your post won't change anything because those people don't realise you are talking about them. Maybe if you listed their names in this thread, they will realise they are bad posters and start changing their ways.

The forums are a necessary part of EVE. The metagame dynamic is essentially powered by grudges and cultural incompatibility. The forums hugely facilitate the precious hatred and contempt required to keep people logging in to kill those scrubs.
