Hello everyone!

I am thinking about getting the Surface Pro- one of the main reasons being that it should be a great portable EVE Online tablet.

The integrated Intel HD 4000 card is really not the best card, but from what I've seen, it should handle EVE Online with medium settings at the least. Can anyone with an Intel HD series integrated card chime in on their experience with EVE Online?
The new MacBook Pro 13'' has an Intel 4000 integrated graphics card that can push some really intensive graphical work - http://youtu.be/Wy1dLr0g6Yc?t=47s for an example.

An overview of the Surface specifications:
Full 1080p Screen
3rd Generation i5 Processor
4GB RAM
Intel HD 4000 Integrated Graphics
64 to 128GB internal SSD

What do you guys think? Will the Surface make a great portable EVE Online tablet? What other Windows 8 tablets look good for running EVE?

The 3rd gen i5 processor with integrated graphics is pretty impressive. I've not played with one, but it is probably capable of playing and displaying EVE with the current build without too much trouble.

Quote:
Intel HD Graphics on 3rd generation Intel Core processors is 2x faster than HD Graphics on 2nd generation Intel® Core™ processors,234 enhancing 3D game playability for a fast, smooth, and entertaining experience overall.

i5 is also generally a pretty capable processor overall. 4GB of RAM, SSD, and built in 1080p make it pretty impressive. Heat may be an issue though, but I guess there may be options to make it less of one out there. Maybe.

As I said though, I haven't tested, tried, and certainly have no familiarity with the tablet itself.

You could just use a VPN and thus run everything on your home system.
That is how I play on a Samsung S3.
though screen size makes controlling an issue.
but yeah you can use the Surface in some manner or other to play EVE.

i would think it would work great... there is room for blue tooth mouse and keybord plus a micro hdmi means you can hook it up to your hdtv...

i mean most people for fleet fights and what not only have minimal setting on... so you should be more then fine...

That's very interesting, while without question fleet combat is out, but what about light chores like updating market orders and PI?

I use an Intel integrated card on my laptop, and it gets hot as hell. If I play more than one client at the same time, the whole laptop shuts down from overheating.

Unfortunately, what they're doing there isn't particularly graphics-intense beyond pushing a lot of pixels.

EVE is less about pushing pixels and more about calculating them, which is where you quickly see the speed drop off.

Could you tell me more about this? I have used Splashtop but it is really laggy and annoying to use. I have an HP Touchpad which I installed Android on, and a Galaxy Nexus which I would love to try EVE on.

My laptop's Intel HD crashes on every jump or undock (eg Windows restarts the display driver making the screen black for 10 seconds). Seems to go in waves though as CCP do patches and fixes sometimes it works sometimes it breaks, been like that for 2 years now.

imo it sucks.

Very doubtful eve will rub on surface at all - not windows 8 but windows rt
"Windows RT (formerly known as Windows on ARM) is a version of the Windows 8 operating system for ARM devices such as tablet and the Microsoft Surface that was released on October 26, 2012. The RT initialism does not officially stand for anything.[1]

Unlike other Windows operating systems, it will only be able to run software that has been certified by Microsoft and placed in the Windows Store"

I use http://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx for vpn it is easy to use and integrates nicely.
There really isnt an issue if you just make a vpn yourself (check online guides)
all the apps do is make the process easier.
I havent done anything outside station, but the screensize is what decides everything.
Bigger=Better
Also make sure your hardware is patched and cleaned of dust and debris.
And has the correct thermal load management hardware (thermal paste, cooling tube touches and such)
I have done alot on integrated graphics (including 3d modeling) and putting settings to min will get you alot of stuff running.

I was planning the same. However I just wamted to use an alt account to have the map open all the time. It is a pain to use the map while flying in one screen.

I followed the instructions found here; only setting Vertex Processing to "Enable software processing" prevented the eve client from ever crashing again on my older laptop.

I'm pretty sure the Surface Pro will run EVE brilliantly at low settings.

He wrote that he is planning to get the surface PRO, not RT.

The Pro Version is able to handle every piece of software just fine, since its the same version desktop pc´s and laptops are getting.

To OP.:
The integrated graphics of the trigate i5 is very impressive. Im running a laptop with an i5 ivybridge on windows 8 and it runs awesomely good! The surface even has better specs than my current laptop, which is why i am definately buying one in early 2013 aswell.

How does the Surface dump heat form that video processor when running EVE?

I foresee lithium fires and scorched table tops in your future.

the surface got an intelligent perimetric fan cooling which is superior to usual laptop air cooling.
heat is a problem, yes, but its the same problem every laptop has.

The integrated Intel HD 4000 is a fantastic GPU.

Running EvE on everything maxed out (minus AA and Shadows) at 30-40fps on an 11inch Macbook Air.

Keep in mind since its an integrated chip that the more system memory (RAM) you have, the better it will perform.
