When to use a freighter?

In these turbulent times with suicide gankings everywhere you look, what role does a freighter have? I can fly one on my trader but I have no idea what to use it for. I'm training to use a JF which has obvious uses, but what about the ones without jumping capabilities?

Transporting large stuff with est. value below 1b isk or giving everyone lols when they get popped carrying 5+bil isk.

Haha, exactly what I'd like to avoid. Though this is exactly what I thought, but I can't think of one instance where I can actually fill a freighter and not break 1 bil, which is why I asked the question. In most cases a regular hauler can carry enough. Freighters just seem pointless these days and I was hoping to be convinced otherwise

Really?

A load of isotopes in one stack, mods unless you have am orca, etc.

Freighters can haul anything below 1 bil, which can be a ton of stuff. If you have 1000 mod in 4 stacks, your choice is freighter or an orca. Anything else will get popped.

And you can't light a cyno in high sec, so once in high sec, a jf is really just an expensive freighter.

…specifically, a much faster and sturdier freighter.

Then you don't need a freighter.

Although to be fair you don't need to fill the freighter, just fill it past Orca capacity.

Nah I guess I don't... but I can fly/afford one which is why I asked. I have no idea what they're used for. Maybe I wasn't clear about my ignorance

One possible use: mineral transport for mass construction. Tritanium is profitable but bulky; you can carry roughly something like ten to fifteen million units at most in an Orca if you've got your skills maxed and the ship rigged and fitted for max cargo, and that's enough for maybe three battleships, and not enough for a single cap ship. A freighter can carry something like fifty million units of tritanium.

So if you're doing mass logistics operations, a freighter might be handy. Or if you'd like to move a metric crapload of trit around to play the markets.

So, you trained it without knowing "what to use it for"?? You're kidding, right?

Well I have a trader alt and he doesn't need any more trade skills so I was lik "now what?" and trained freighters. They looked really useful and then I found out that freighters get suicide ganked all the time

It's all relative. I don't use my freighter all that often but when i do I rarely fill it.

That being said, you can fit 500mil into an Itty 5. And you will likely get popped. You can put that same 500mil into a freighter and pretty much afk autopilot it in safety.

You can carry >1b in a freighter, but you have to be smart about it.

* Don't AFK.
* Don't use common gates / approaches through known trouble spots.
* Use a scout.
* Consider using fleet booster alt(s).
* Consider using a same-corp webbing alt to get to warp faster (most frigates can fit a 1MN MWD and two webs).

You will find it hard to apply more than 2 webs solo, and it takes a fast ship (Slasher, Condor, etc.)

1x T2 Web: Web-and-instawarp at 30% of max velocity
2x T2 Web: Web-and-instawarp at 15% of max velocity
3x T2 Web: Web-and-instawarp at 10% of max velocity
4x T2 Web: Web-and-instawarp at 8% of max velocity

You can use your freighter to fly around fitted ships.

They are not ganked all the time. There are hundreds of freighters being used in new eden at all times, a tiny fraction of these get ganked when carrying high values of stuff through certain systems. And it is very easy to "fill" a freighter and keep under a bil (which isn't a hard limit either, you are very unlikely to be ganked under 2 bil really).

Can you? I thought you needed a ship with a hangar bay (an Orca or a carrier) to do that.

You can if you make a courrier contract.

Double wrap your items and you can get away with carrying more than 1 bill isk in goods because your cargo can't be scanned.
Double wrap--- put goods in a container then create a courier contract. Need an alt to do this.. but hey CCP have be kind and given you 3 on each account Blink

Or you'll be ganked by someone who decides to take a chance on you carrying more.

Woo! CSM XI!
