Yeah....definitely needs some work. It's so much of a pain in the ass trying to figure things out (useless ass tutorials) and fine tuning everything i don't even bother, unless I'm REALLY bored....though getting lost in WH space for 9 hours did give me a rather enlightening crash course in learning to probe (and checking to see if the WH i'm about to pop in to look around is about to collapse any second), but still....needs some work.

Having done a lot of probing at one time, (enough to get sick of it), I understand what you're saying and generally agree with you. I like the cone idea as it's very simple in terms of change and doesn't require excess coding or parameters to be involved. It saves the interface from becoming bloatware to say the least.

I do recall sigs being in the way, but I don't recall why to be honest. I'd like to see the option to only show unknown sigs in addition to all that.

Cones instead of arrows sounds like an elegant idea that would be easy to implement. Add it to the backlog, duders.

So, if I understand correctly, OP is saying the face of the arrows should flip to give the appearance they currently do when looking from top-down or bottom-up?

+1 small changes like this would make it less tedious

Also: ability to save probes config directly attached to scan type would remove another tedious click fest.
Improving scan by making it less tedious is not dumbing down the game, dumb are people who don't want changes or a better intuitive/improved scanning interface.

This seems like a great idea.... although I'd want to test it. I fear if my camera is on a non-axis angle, the arrows might become clutter-some.

So, I was scanning and after trying to move the probes along the x axis while looking at the probes from the side and then having to reposition my camera for the bazillionth time I figured ccp should fix this LITTLE but grief and frustration inducing issue.

Scanning involves 3 axises; x, y, and z.

If I am looking along the x axis and want to move the y axis arrows, I gotta reposition my camera in a way to grab something OTHER than this little itty bitty sliver of garbage arrows. So I was thinking, If I am looking at the x axis, why can't the arrows of y and z rotate to face me and my camera to be more easily grabbed? Why do the arrows have to be static?

I've got some pictures to illustrate what I am trying to say

PS: To the wormhole csm rep, I thought this kind of stuff is what you should be talking about. Little things to improve Eve. Living in a wh, I'd expect you to at least share some of the concerns of the WH and scanner community.

So, make the arrows use cones instead of flat triangles?

Also, I was expecting you to suggest having 4 viewports (1 for each axis + an isometric view).

Left disappointed! (j/k)

it would be just like a 3d animation interface- easy enough fix

+1, good stuff

While at it, please give an option to disable the probe tooltips(hovering), I normally don't need to know which probe is which by hovering on them.

Ooh, the good ol' UnrealEd view. I know it wasn't the first, nor the last to use it. But it's the one I used the most, so that's how I'll refer to that view.

But that would be great to get. See how your scanners compare to the target ship in all three dimensions without having to scroll around.

I like this idea a lot, while they are at it can they make it so i can center my view on one specific proboe more easily? i have yet to figure out how to do this

Right click Center View option per probe (in scanner list) easy? Could be cool.
As it is though you only need to left click on the probes name to center the view there.
Granted visual clutter / view angle can make this annoying.

Also, upper left of each probe box has an identifier. You can center on the specific probe by double clicking that identifier.

What would be nice is to double click the signature/anomaly and automatically center on that. If there is a way to do this, I haven't figured it out.

While we're at it can we get a way to know where our ship is pointed? I use the Directional Scanners alot while probing, and then when i go to map view i get completely lost as to where my ship is facing, so a green arrow that shows exactly the orientation of your ship in map view would be awesome.

Actually, I can suggest a further refinement.

Make it possible to see the changes before you implement them.

(Have a set of red bubbles / icons adjustable to new ranges or placements)

An option to scale up or scale down probe searches, based on the concept you want the probes distance from each other to keep the same ratio of distance apart to scan range.
(A set of scan range bubbles at 2 AU radius would keep the same relative position and percentage of overlap if you bumped them up to 8 AU, or down to 1 AU respectively)

Manually re-positioning these for each and every change in scan range ignores what is a simple task for our ship computers to perform for us.

Scanning with probes should be less tedious, and more intuitive.

Hehehe. Scanning. Try anchoring POS modules sometimes. You will be grateful for the intuitive and simple to use probing interface.

(Sarcasm aside, both "drag-a-box-in-three-dimensions" interfaces could use some more polish.)
