Hackintosh- OSX as an eve-running OS?

Hey all,

I'm seriously considering building a hackintosh as my main computer, I'd have windows on a dual boot.

How is OSX as a general OS for an eve-player? I'm thinking specifically

1) General game performance- is it going to be the same, better or worse than on a similar system with windows?
2) Extra programs like EFT/Eve Mon - is there a mac skill tracker and ship fitter?
3) Teamspeak/mumble and other often used communications software- are there any that don't work with OSX?

Any general feedback would be helpful.

Thanks in advance!

I have a 15" Retina MBP. Base model running Mountain Lion (no dual boot)

1. Performance with everything on medium/high (no post-processig nor AA) it is ok. But, there are blackscreens, freezes and sometimes disconnects. I played from a 4 years old laptop before and while the quality of graphics was worse as i was playing with everything on low, the stability was way better. If you bootcamp, probably you won't have these issues... probably :)

2. Pyfa as ship fitter. Skill tracking ... no idea, i'm running EVE Mon on windows inside Virtual Box.

3. Teamspeak, Mumble, Skype have mac os clients. I use skype so, no idea how the other apps are working.

My playing time it is pretty random so, i didn't bothered getting bootcamp up but if you play a lot, install windows in bootcamp.

Ive heard you take a x2 to x3 reduction in fps. Most mac users set the graphics down a notch to compensate. Also for some reason 10 to 15 fps on a Mac still looks fairly good, plays fairly well. Its not until you drop below 10 that it gets annoying, at least for me.

The crashes and lockups seem to depend on the peculiarities of your setup and internet more than which OS you use. Ive been in fleets where I have no issues and the PC people are locking up and DCing all over the place.

I have a hackintosh 3570k and use hd4000 run 4 clients windowed just fine. I actually crash more on my real macs then on the hackintosh for some reason.

I have a macbook pro non retina, here are my experiences:

Ill start with cons sense everyone wants those first:

Cons:

1.) The mac client is not tolerant of bandwidth flux. If your connection specifically upload bounces up and down a lot you could start to see freezes. I am lucky enough to not be on a network with everyone and their brother running torrent clients. I did find I had to shut mine off and the lag would decrease a **** ton. Generally this will happen whenever you have to "load" something. I find any time I have to load a decently busy grid, or when I do a big market search.. or in places like jita when I just open up the market.

2.) If you play in window mode some times some of the context menus get lost outside of screen space. I am sure this is a problem for windows users as well however.

3.) Heat can be an issue but there are lots of work arounds for this, and thats not really the macs fault either. Get a fan controller software, or laptop cooler you should be fine.

Pros:

1.) Multiple work spaces make multi-boxing with one monitor so much easier if you play in windows mode.

2.) No noticeable problems in any voice communication software.

3.) Game looks very nice with settings jacked up all the way. I am capable of running 3 clients at the same time max graphics no "software" related problems.

All in all the flak you will take from your corp mates for being with in 10 ft of a mac is far worse then any performance issues I have yet to see!

Its funny when "they" get disconnected or glitched out its always "stupid CCP" but when I get disconnected or glitched out its always "Thats cause your on a mac"

I'm playing EVE on a hackintosh, based on a P5Q-PRO motherboard with a Core 2 Quad Q6600 and Radeon HD6850. 10.8.2 Mountain Lion no problems, but it's tricky to make the graphics work, also multi monitor support is not really good in EVE's mac client.

I too play on a hackintosh which i actually use as a hackintosh for penetration testing. my rig:

MacBook Pro
2.7 ghz process (quad-core)
8gb RAM
750GB HDD
model 8,3 (early spring 2011)
Lion

filevault is turned off
"automatically select graphics performance" is turned off

the game runs great but my lap get's quite warm depending on how long I am online. No issues so far, though I just came back to game a few days ago.
