Questions involving Covert Ops Cloaks

So I'm looking at getting back into exploration but this time venturing into low and null sec, and I have a couple questions about the functionality of a CovertOps Cloaking device.

1) Is there anything you can do while the cloak is engaged? Say, locking onto a traget and checking their cargo? Or launch scanner probes?
2) if I get too close to somthing will the cloak drop? If so, what is the range?
3) If I'm hiding out on a moon with my Claking device engaged will anybody be able to scan me down with probes? Can D-scan locate a cloaked individual?

1) no - you can move around, warp. First launch probes then cloak
2) yes - 2000m - get too close, uncloak
3) no - you'll be visible in local, but not in dscan/probe/overview. Mind #2 above.Smile

More info on #1: You can do everything except lock targets, activate modules, or interact with in-space objects (loot, jump, etc).

Important note: if you already have probes deployed, you can still direct them around while cloaked.

Good addition, Petrus.

Once deployed, be sure your probes are more than 2K away or else you won't be able to cloak (typically move them + analyze does it).

You can also return your probes to your ship without uncloaking. This is a magical thing about probes...but you'll need to uncloak in order to reload them.

Thank you! This thread just made my life a bit less hair raising. I had no idea you could cloak up after launching probes and still use them. Oops
Oh, and the obvious point - You can cloak while warping with a covOps cloak.

Oh, before I forget: You cannot still use drones after you cloak up; they disconnect. Only probes work that way.

There is another thing you can do while cloaked - apply nanite paste to your modules to repair them. Except, of course, to the cloaking device itself.

Don't you have a fraction of a window just after initiating cloak to run an Afterburner or a MWD while cloaked?

I am trying to put together the fastest Cov Ops ship I can. It will be for recon only. I am trying to fit a Cheetah with only mods for speed. The speed is only for being cloaked.

I've got the Overdrive Injectors in the three low slots, but I am having trouble finding something to fit in the mids and rigs.

I then happened to remember the Cloak MWD trick and thought this could be done anytime you cloak, or am I missing something?

EDIT : Well, I just tried and while you can activate the MWD at cloak...it only lasts for one cycle.

I did find some thruster rigs that adds to the max velocity. Not sure about the mids. That is only for MWDs and ABs, I guess.

Yes, the Cloak+MWD trick only works for 1 single cycle, and you have to time it perfectly. Otherwise it would be way overpowered to have a cloaked ship go that fast.

As for mids, only Prop mods for there.

Top tip:

Deploy your probes, move the constellation way, way out of the system on the map (14.3AU+ from the nearest celestial), then hit scan. Anyone Dscanning in the system will then be unable to see your probes (too far away). You can then use your own Dscan to work out where he is (guides are available) and, if you want to, you can then combat scan him in as short as one cycle of your probes.

A decentish guide is here: http://www.tigerears.org/2012/04/17/how-to-hunt-in-w-space-using-d-scan/ and it applies to K-space as well, you just have to accept you're visible in the local channel.

Does this hold true to the Cov OP CD as well?

So, if you jump into a bubble. ( I assume you can still use the MWD in one?) then activate the cloak and MWD, as if you were in a standard ship, it would only run for one cycle?
