Just a quick heads up. I confirmed this with CCP Falcon as I suspected people had the wrong idea, but the Tournament prize is actually being provided by own3D and not CCP.

Heh. "e-sport".

A game. Competitive gaming, but a sport?

No wonder gaming lacks credibility claiming such titles.

Dear OP think before you post, there are 1000's of players who play this game, you understand the motivations and likes of only one, that being you. Thanks and have a nice day. Big smile

I'm a nerd, you can check my stats!! Skilling Int/Mem at 45 sp per minute is how I mack!     I'm like a lapdog, all bark no bite.

If they are paying any of the cur devs for this inferno mess 10,000 a month, THAT is definately a waste of money.

As for PvP, most of the lame players don't PvP cause they have a gang of their girlfriends. And killing any unarmed mining ship is certainly not PvP, just pure cowardly.

Is this tourney going to honor rl PvP? 1v1? or will 1 have logi support?

Edit: I've modified your post as per Forum rule 19:

I guess I made this post on the wrong forum then. Time to educate owe3D about their future failed experiment. While beams of light shooting back and forth may be entertaining for people with a child-like sense of appreciation. There is no way they are going to make that money back from EVE viewers since nobody who doesn't play EVE is going to watch. Maybe if toddlers knew how to operate computers. Some pro players who stream themselves playing on SC2 ladder get more views than EVE tournaments do. I have to wonder if it was the subscription numbers that fooled them.

pls post what is wrong with post.

OP is correct that u don't need skills, or u make sure to only fight solo wit players with half the SP as urself.

Most do not PvP, instead u pick on noobs solo, be sure u have a gang of ur girlfriends wit u, or pay ccp for 3 or more accounts to give urself logi support.....too scared for a fair fight in a game.....

we should all just hunt for OP.
like a passive hunt, try to kill it when we see it so OP gets pvp but doesn't have to pay for it?

@ OP -

Solo PVP is as you described. Training gives an edge and having the right fit on the right ship for the right circumstances can give a person a win.

There's one word you left out of your original post though, which tells me you are looking at this from the standpoint of a skilled solo player who prefers individual accolades and recognition of personal accomplishment and skill when it comes to competition. That's not a bad mindset, but Eve doesn't cater to that mindset when it comes to most PVP.

The word missing from your original post is: TEAMS

This tourney is based upon teamwork.

Anyone who has been in Eve long enough can tell you that they have seen a small fleet of lesser fitted ships overcome the odds to win a fight against a fleet that should have plowed them.

Their success was based upon good decisions of the fleet commander and tight teamwork.

That's what this tourney is focusing on.

I understand your views as well though. As a former competition player who participated in Invite Leagues and cash-prize leagues, I can see where you would be searching for something more adherent to individual skill. Eve is not constructed like that. Teams win battles in Eve and it takes every person in that team to win it. On the contrary, it can sometimes only take one person to lose the battle for the team. The dynamic is different, but the teamwork is required.

…that, and the politics and meta-gaming to horribly screw over other teams in new and interesting way for the education and entertainment of all. It's EVE in a nutshell. P

...so this thread is about CCP wasting time?

Thank you for taking the time to write it.

If I hadn't wasted time reading it I might have ended up letting CCP waste my time. I just don't have that kind of time.

CCP says they want to grow EVE pvp into some kind of e-sport, but that will never happen for the following reasons:

1. EVE pvp is a joke amongst competitive pvpers. It is viewed as a game that requires very little skill and has an extremely low skill ceiling. In EVE, you don't beat your opponents because you were a more skilled player, you beat them because you were fortunate enough to choose correct modules and were in the right ship and knew how to operate it, which also isn't something terribly difficult. When compared to the skills of pro players in other competitive e-sport games like starcraft2, you can see a enormous margin of what is required of the player. There is no need for tactical use of terrain, nor a need for high coordination, aiming or high actions per minute, nor micromanage, very little strategy is involved, and the reactionary abilities of your opponents are extremely limited. These pvp mechanics do not attract skilled, competitive gamers, they are the things that make them shy away.

2. Time investment. The amount of skill training required to be on the same level as the competition is not something that is quickly obtained. Many players have had years to get skill level 5 in everything they need. This is not something that is appealing to anyone who might become interested in EVE because of said tournaments. By the time a newer player reached a competitive level there are many factors that could have changed within that time (such as ship rebalancing) which could require more time investment or may not be worth doing at all. In essence,

3. It is not entertaining to watch. There is no display of skill that is nearly as admirable as watching a player like MarineKingprime play starcraft2. These players are so amazing to watch that they generate a following that continues to support their e-sport. If it weren't for amazing players like MKP, I would no longer buy subscriptions to watch him play in the global standard leauge. At a basic level, competitive Starcraft can be understood and is entertaining to watch, even for people who aren't very familar with the game.

Although it is very admirable of CCP for doing this. There has never been a successful e-sport with a knowledge-based game for a reason. These tournaments aren't going to attract any new players to EVE. Since this tournament is done solely to appease current players of EVE. I feel that $10,000 could be better spent hiring more devs to improve the game for everyone instead of the few people who were fortunate enough to already have the trained book skills and know-how required for this tournament.

There isn't really anything less entertaining to watch than a professional starcraft match tbh Each to thier own i guess.
