Grinding standing for alts?

So can I use one of my characters to grind standing up for another? I thought the answer was yes or used to be. The next question I have is do they have to be in the same system or can they be a couple systems apart? Really I guess how far apart can they be and still share the standing?

As long as you are in the same fleet, it doesn't matter where you are.
