How to kite or counter-kite

"Go to target, shoot them in the face" is the most obvious way to pew pew in Eve, but it is not the only one. Another very popular one is kiting, which is keeping distance from your target while projecting damage better than he is. When up against it, or trying it, many newbies assume it's pure magic (it's what it seemed like to me). It's not, though, so have a guide about how to do it without use of any magic:

Enjoy!

Update: And... have a guide on how to counter kiting: http://www.thewholefrigate.com/2012/10/magic-nullification-countering-kiting.html

OP updated with a guide on how to counter kiting, as well.

Woo! \o/

Thanks!

Note that some things do get outdated over time, so don't be misled. Some examples are the "what do guns look like" guide (the gun models changed since I wrote that), how efficient the Rifter really is compared to other frigates, and some minor visual differences (different ships, locations, etc).

In regards to kiting NPCs:

Are there any rules of thumb or guides out there that let you know what the rats optimal range is? Alternatively should you just go for your farthest range and work slowly in?

I'd go with the "working slowly in". You'll get a feel for the rats' range and damage output as you face them over time. For example, while I used to rat in Providence years ago, I noticed the Sansha battleships' best range was around 30-40 km, the crusiers around 10-15 km, and both of them mostly missed my Hurricane under 6-7 km.

There may be some guide or rule of thumb somewhere, but I'm not aware of it.

BTW a big "thumbs up" for the guide and the blog. Your effort and time are very much appreciated.

Thanks, guys! Getting positive feedback is really encouraging for wanting to write more, and I've got a couple topics in mind already (one that will be especially extremely relevant come Retribution).

As in, when you should pay ransom to pirates, and when you're being ripped off? Sure, I guess. I do have a "Question From A Newbie" series thing going on. Ed: the tl;dr though is, if they're asking for more than your ship's/pod's total worth, you're being ripped off; you also never know if they're going to actually honor the ransom.

I could also make a separate thread in Newbie Q&A asking for questions to be answered in long form (with lovingly hand-rendered pictures, of course) on my blog. These would typically be questions that have too complicated answers to really expound on in just a forum post.

That's quaint. You're cute. I meant more like what is too much to ask for nowadays...with so many not honoring the ransoms? When is it not worth the time to stop and demand isk? If it's just a t1 frig should I have 'em walk the plank and loot their booty or is there still a chance that faction gear and t2 mods are worth 50M on a small hull?

There's definitely a chance of you carrying more than 50M in a T1 frig, especially in the places that are most often camped. These are lowsec "shortcuts" between trade hubs, and you could be trying to capitalize on a market opportunity by carrying something small (blueprints, skillbooks, implants, etc) that is worth quite a lot. This is best done in frigates, since they are small, align quickly, and warp quickly.

Or they could be counting on you being in a terrible corp that punishes its members for losing ships, or you wanting to avoid the embarassment, or simply be trying to ripping you off based on ignorance. Even more so for ransoming your pod.

Ed: I just figured out you might be asking how much you could charge. I don't know. That's for every pirate to find out. If I were you, though, I'd go with 90% of the approximate full fitted price of a combat ship (e.g. 35 mil ISK for an assault frigate), with a much higher ratio for anything that is likely faction fitted or is carrying loads of goodies (faction ships, agile ships, shuttles, etc).

Well thank you Petrus. I am strongly considering a life of bugery on the high seas. The only thing giving me caution is that most of my measly skill points are in frigs & I don't know if anything I can manage on my own is actually worth the risk. Considering what may be in a pilot's hull as part of the ransom hadn't occurred to me. I leave these forums emboldened
