If you had to give an honest opinion on Eve to a friend.

What would you say?

Couple of my real life friends we're talking about starting in Eve and asked if I'd recommend it. Honestly, I didn't know what to say.

All I could think of was the divide that comes with starting such an old game. Now I realize I'm probably wrong but the divide does seem huge. A few people control alliances that in turn control mass amounts of wealth and chances. Sure some of them fall but mostly they just seem to rename themselves and start over.

Obviously, like with any game. You take the forums with a pinch of salt. Especially when so many people create alts to back up an opinion. Still, a lot of what you read on the Eve forums is pretty negative. Things taking years to fix, being rushed out and so forth. The bitching about bots, Super's nerf. etc.

So what is it actually like starting from scratch now?

Would you recommend it?

All I could really say was "What not play the trial and see what you think?". Bit of a weak answer, but the best I could come up with.

The NPE is changed drastically in the last few years and it is now easier then ever to actually get into things.

Just make sure to not let them be discouraged by that gap. There is still a bunch fo things they can do as a newb and even more things they can do as a newb that is part of a group ^^

I recommended it to some of my friends and they even started playing. I gave them a buddyinvite and a plex so they had a full account for free for 21days + one month.

None of them stayed.

Why? They stayed in an NPC-corp and ran missions.

I told them not to do that and get involved in some pvp/lowsec/other stuff. In the end I think it's a niche game and PvE is very underdevelopped.

Imo the tutorials could do much better. Currently they only teach you (very) basic game mechanics and after that you are on your own in space.

At the end of the tutorials you should be given lots of info about your options in new Eden.

I really dont know cause it took me the better part of a year to really get to where I enjoy the game, then four more to get into a position to do what I want to lol (there were many vacations in there by the way - except the first year part)

I stick with the truth, it's a sandbox and there's no game quite like it. There's a daunting amount of freedom, you can do practically anything you can dream up, people will scam you and it can all be very confusing. But if you have a goal, and you find some like-minded people, you'll never look back.

The question of a "new player gap" always come up, and eve's probably got one of the smallest gaps - a 2 week old character can accomplish some incredible things, especially if they make some friends.

I've always though that one of the fundamental problems with EVE (that is rarely brought up) is the very long training times.
It takes ALOT of time and effort to get a character to a "fun to play" level, and that makes EVE a game that only a minority can ever learn to enjoy.
Sure you can spend alot of real money and buy a 6 year old character, but that is something a very few would do.

So my answer to the OP would be to explain this to your friend and point him to the Evelopedia and other sources of information to read, before he gets too involved. It never hurts to make a trial account though.

I have tried to get 3 to get of my friends to play and have failed. They said the UI is too hard to control. There is nothing to do and have heard too many bad things about the game so they refuse to play. (forever alone)

I have more space likes than you.

Honest answer:
I would not recommend EvE to most people before corporation tools and features have been revamped.

Dishonest answer:
I could recommend EvE to someone after spending hour explaining the potential it has.

Its a pretty bad game with lots of potential but the metagame is fun and if you get in a good alliance the jabber can be entertaining.

Lacks a lot of Casual Fun, Sometimes it is boring, Takes a Long Time to reach the Middle of the Pack even with a Plan and Very Complicated to Learn.

That said, Find your Niche and it is great fun. The Community is excellent, the Game is very Deep and there is a lot to do. The Game has a ton of Unique Content you will not find in other MMO's and Career Paths are intricate and involved. One Server where you can make your mark as anything from a leader of your own Empire, Mercenary, Notorious Con Man or Industrial Mogul. These are not Character classes, you can be them just by Deciding to do it and putting in the grunt work. Reputation and Action Matter more then anything else here.

Just some of the stuff involved.

Hundreds of Missions in 5 different Lvls
Wormhole Raids
Incursion Raids
Galaxy Wide Market Trading Moving Hundreds of Billions an Hour.
Wars, Piracy and Conquest in a free and open World.
Mining and Construction.
Exploration and Complexes.
Thousands of Star Systems Millions of Km Across open to you.
Everything you and everyone else owns can be lost.
Factions are meaningless, you must make relationships with people to have allies.

The Game is Difficult but Amazing.

Just two things to keep in mind. If a Someone you do not know can kill you they will. Never trust anyone with your money and read everything carefully, Cons and Scams are Legal and Common. No matter how nice and reassuring they are do not trust them with anything you aren't willing to loose.

A good Mantra before you do anything at all is to look at your assets involved in anything you are about to do and say "They are already gone". If you can accept the loss and think the potential for reward is good enough then go for it.

So wanna give it a go?

Eve is one of the only(and in my opinion by far the best) loot dropping open world pvp games available.

It is difficult and frustrating at first, and many things are broken.

It is the only MMO that has kept my attention for more than a few hours.

I love eve, probably would not recommend it to most of my friends.

Been playing since 2008.

I plan on living forever.......so far, so good.

I would tell them its a cruel place that glorifies cyber bullying and being a ****. (More so than most MMOs)

BUT there are 1000s of very nice and awesome people that can make the game fun and interesting to play.

Goes with a common philosophy, good times always look better when the hard times look worse.

Also I would tell them to only read the forums if they can imagine everyone as little smurfs.... or some other ridiculous creature that might say ridiculous things.

I'd recommend the game in general but would emphasize that starting to play now is risky.

If he is fine with playing with a time horizon of a few months I'd say go ahead but if he thinks long-term and doesn't like to take risks i'd recommend to wait until the DUST settles (i.e. until it becomes clear how CCP will react to the first 2-3 months of DUST sales).

I would not advertise EVE to friends that don't ask me about the game on their own (almost all of them don't know that I play EVE), would feel too much like selling them and the game is not that good.
(If they find out about EVE on their own and are curious enough to ask around if anyone has first-hands experience with it that's already a pretty strong sign that they might enjoy EVE - but forcing EVE on unsuspecting people would probably backfire horribly in most cases)

Of course this would just be a scam, I'd pick the sister do my business and "haa, sry just got hacked"

What do you want someone reasonable to say?

Already tried to bring some friends/family, they're all gone after the 14D trial saying "beautifull game but such a waste, CCP should pay you to play with all that scum"

So I'm not even saying anymore I play Eve.
