Radar/Magnometric site question

I recently ventured into lowsec to do some exploration sites and was rewarded by the plethora of available sites to do.Big smile

I was a bit suprised to find the difficulty of the rats to be worse than I anticipated. I had to bail from my first site without all the loot because of the incoming damage. As expected, when I warped back, the site had de-spawned. However, I did develop a strategy to deal with this problem.

The first thing I would do would be to warp to "within 100km" of the site and then burn away from the site until I was over 150k from all the cans and set a new BM. This allowed me to warp away from the rats that spawn when you crack a can but remain on grid so the site wouldn't de-spawn. It also helped me dictate range when fighting the rats and let me move around the site more quickly.

Yes I realize that in many situations you would want to do a site as quickly as possible and my intention is to upgrade my tank to better deal with the rats. In the mean time...

I would like some input regarding this tactic. Specifically, can I use a scanning bonused ship to scan the site, warp in, place the 150k BM, warp out and return in a ship better suited for the combat but unpleasantly slow?

If I understand the mechanics correctly, the site will not de-spawn because I did not activate a analyzer/codebreaker/salvager on the cans at the site?

I would experiment but at my wallet I dont want to risk the loss

Thanks

What ship are you flying, out of interest?

An active armor tank Arbitrator fit as an all in one exploration ship. Once I was able to dictate range I was able to kite the rats and let the drones do the work.

I am going to eventually upgrade to a Myrmidon so that I won't have to bounce when the rats jump me. I would also be able to do most combat plexes in it with a quick re-fit.

if you are in angel or gurista space, a shield tank might be better suited. you would also have more space for drone damage mods.

I should buy an Ishtar.

Thank you but I am dealing with primarily EM and Thermal damage. If EFT is anything to go by my dream Myrm will be cap stable at 81k ehp with 300+ repair per second.

whether that will actually work is another questionBig smile

I wouldn't recommend doing it in a T1 cruiser.
A BC will be much more suited, or a T2 cruiser at least.

A T1 cruiser is ok for high-sec, but for low-sec you will sometimes find a BS or several elite cruisers which will do you a lot of harm.

recon ships rock at low sec radar/mag sites. they are fast, have not problem tanking the rats, and force recons can use covops cloak which is nice when running sites in low sec.

So I appreciate the suggestions regarding which ship I should aim for flying next but does anyone know if my proposal would work?

Can you warp to a site, not activate it, and return later with a different ship?

Yes.

But... sometimes hacking a can spawns new rats. Obviously once you've started on the cans then warping out and getting another ship is not an option.

Thank you

My intention would be to find the site in a covert ops frig and return in a BC to both clear the rats and access the cans.

That works fine. In fact, you needn't even warp to the site in your frig. Just bookmark it from the scanning screen and bug out immediately to get your other ship. There's no need to play bookmark games to land yourself further from the spawn if you're in a BC.

I go exploring in low quite often myself and I have also done so extensively in an arbitrator. I think you either need to get better skills in game or change your tactics of how you do the sites.

I can not remember my exact fit but for the low slots I would go with this:

Medium Armor Repairer II
Energized EM Membrane II
Energized Thermic Membrane II
Damage Control II (replace with 200mm tungsten if you want a little bit more armour, but you will be reducing your overall effective hp)

In one medium slot put a large capacitor battery II and you will have capacitor for the rep for several minutes. This shoud be enough. Once you enter a site kill all the rats with your drones (get good drone skills as soon as you can!). Start opening the cans and kill off any new npc that spawns. I have managed to complete exploration sites (mag or radar) in null sec with an arbitrator (if I remeber correctly that was one with a small rep and 1600 mm tungsten plate) so low should be fine. Good luck! Or well perhaps you should get blown up a few times and leave the sites for me to complete, cant decide what I wish the most right now. ;)...

Sounds like you're in Delve or Fountain TEST/Blood Raider space? : D

My understanding is that unless you start hacking/analyzing/salvaging a can, the despawning won't be triggered. So you could clear out the rats that are already there first, but as Zhilia has mentioned, sometimes there will be new spawns that 'protect' a can and you have to kill those to access the loot (secure server for instance can be a *****).

I didn't specifically have experience with the Arbitrator, but i flew its T2 version, the Pilgrim quite extensively in lowsec - and i would think that most of the lowsec radars/mags should be doable in an Arbitrator. I would either fit it to kite (mwd) or sigtank (ab). Working with a hybrid of buffer and active tank also has proven quite successful for me (for instance to survive the initial dps in 5/10 last rooms until my tank started working again ... but that wouldn't be possible in an arbitrator, you could however adopt something similar.

Good luck out there.

The main problem with the Arbitrator (or the Pilgrim) is the CPU if you want to fit an Expanded Probe Launcher. I haven't flown the Arbitrator, I prefer the Pilgrim for lowsec explo when I do it (or just a covops alt with maxed scanning/hacking/arch skills and my main to blow stuff up), but I'd probably go with something like this:

[Arbitrator, explo armour]
Medium Armor Repairer II
Internal Force Field Array I
Adaptive Nano Plating II
Adaptive Nano Plating II

10MN Afterburner II
Medium Capacitor Booster II, Navy Cap Booster 400
Analyzer II
Codebreaker II

Salvager II
Small Remote Armor Repair System II /OFFLINE
Prototype Cloaking Device I
Sisters Expanded Probe Launcher, Core Scanner Probe I

Medium Processor Overclocking Unit I
2x rigs which you prefer. Fits with a 3% CPU implant. Drones to taste.

Or "ASB ALL THE STUFF"
[Arbitrator, explo]
Internal Force Field Array I
Drone Damage Amplifier II
Drone Damage Amplifier II
Co-Processor II

Codebreaker II
Medium Ancillary Shield Booster, Cap Booster 50
Medium Ancillary Shield Booster, Cap Booster 50
10MN Afterburner II

Small Remote Armor Repair System II /OFFLINE
Salvager II
Prototype Cloaking Device I
Sisters Expanded Probe Launcher, Core Scanner Probe I

Medium Processor Overclocking Unit I
Medium Processor Overclocking Unit I
Medium Core Defense Field Extender I

Hammerhead II x5
Hobgoblin II x5
Hornet EC-300 x5
Valkyrie II x5
Fits with a +6% CPU implant. I wouldn't fly this one but it'd make a nice bait if you squeeze some neuts and modify the fit a bit.

Pilgrim fit:
[Pilgrim, explo]
Adaptive Nano Plating II
Adaptive Nano Plating II
1600mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates I
Medium Armor Repairer II
Internal Force Field Array I

10MN Afterburner II
Large Peroxide Capacitor Power Cell
Analyzer II
Codebreaker II /OFFLINE
X5 Prototype Engine Enervator

Covert Ops Cloaking Device II
Sisters Expanded Probe Launcher, Core Scanner Probe I
Small Remote Armor Repair System II /OFFLINE
Medium Unstable Power Fluctuator I

Medium Nanobot Accelerator I
Medium Auxiliary Nano Pump I

Hammerhead II x5
Warrior II x5

IMO get a better ship, skip the radar and magsites and go straight for combat sites. I did the radars and mags for a while but I ended up figuring out I spendt almost as much time on those as I did on combat sites and they only provided me with about 20% of the income I was making, By skipping them I started making way more over time.
