I don't like the idea. It's dumbing down the game. It wouldn't be more than just another nail in the coffin. Still it would be exactly that.

I'd be fine with a compromise though.

Let the old name still be searchable and show up as something like "new name (old name(s))" in the resulting list and also in the employment bio, as already suggested by others.

Remove standings and insurance.

Can we get any more melodramatic?

Dumbing down the game? Sheesh...

Having DarthNefarius putting a space between his two names would be a nail in the coffin?

I've been saying for a while (at least, I think so) that we need the ability to have name changes.

Old name links to new name, and character sheet shows all previous names held by the character and the dates they were changed.

Enjoying the rain today? ;)

Changing the name would be a removal of consequences for scammers and corp thieves.

Glad someone went here.

In a game where consequences are a joke half the time, it is such a simple matter for the aforementioned scammers and corp thieves to shake the consequences of their deeds that it is laughable. Example:

The CEO of Guiding Hand Social Club has had a change of heart and wishes to turn over a new leaf in his Eve life. However, certain high profile events have essentially marked him and his brethren for life. Seeing that he will never be openly accepted into a corp, or if he is, will be continually having to explain his simplest of actions to avoid raising suspicions of his corpmates of reverting to form. Thus he creates a new account, making (or buying) a new toon to essentially start over again with a clean slate (as far as anyone else knows).

However, as he is enjoying his time with new corpmates, he begins to notice signs of sloppy security in the hangar and wallet, corpmates flying uber-pimped ships, so on and so forth. The old itch to resurrect old habits surfaces, and because his current corp knows nothing of his previous life, they would essentially be caught with their pants down and their proverbial thumbs up their heinies. They have no clue that the person they accepted into their corp was once an infamous and notorious (as well as brilliant) corp thief and corpmate uber-ship popping inidividual. Why? No employment history, no nothing. API would be pretty much useless as well, so long as the old toon was not on the account with the new one.

So with the loose example posed above, tell me again how your think that allowing a name change, with or without employment, is going to somehow allow anyone to get away with dastardly deeds. With all the methods that CCP gives them to use at their liesure, scammers, corp thieves, corpmate poppers, etc. have very little to worry about in the consequence department indeed. Thus, the argument for employment history is pretty much null and void...if a criminal wants a gun in a state where gun control laws are strict, he'll find a way. Why would an Eve criminal be any different?
A reward devoid of risk is no reward at all, but is instead a handout.

If you buy the character, then I see no problem with it.

Other than that, no.

A name change would be the one thing I would like most. I have had dozens of names across many games, although I have recently been making an effort to use one across all current and future games. EVE is the one game I cannot do this, and even though there is no crossover for me with eve and other games I would still highly prefer to have my primary identity on my main avatar. I am new enough that I have been highly tempted to reroll but it is not quite worth giving up a 12 mil sp character.
