New Eden Open Tournament: Or "Buy your way to $10,000 in cash prizes"

So, tournament slots going to winners of a "plex auction" starting at 20 PLEX. ...and if I read correctly currently no restriction on multiple teams from the same alliance.

Anyone else think the 'auction slots' will just be bought up by multiple teams from the same groups who will just laugh their way to counting the $10,000 prize money?


Random Drawings for at least half the teams. Let the pilots with access to the money-faucets buy only half the slots.

Was almost excited about the tourney, then saw the plex auction.
Time to see the same old same old from alliance tourney.

I've watched a few rounds of past Alliance Tournaments on Youtube and it kinda reminded me of watching golf.

Maybe if I was with a bunch of other people and we were betting money on the matches it would be more interesting.

I understand that there are various opinions about this 'featurette' of the new tournament.

First of all however, it's important to note that not all of the details of this auction are public yet, so it might be worth holding fire!

Secondly, the best way for you to show your concern about this is by posting in the place that will be most actively be monitored by CCP in regards to this tournament.

So if you can direct your comments over here I'd be very grateful.

This is the place that is most actively monitored by CCP. Maybe not do with the tournament, but are not ISDs and DEVs part of the EVE team? Have you not spotted this within a few minutes of the thread being launched?

I disagree this is the best place to fire on it it is the GD of Eve.
I've once tried to enter into the alliance torurnament & contributed 1 billion ISK to get it our small start up alliance going( over half my assets at the time). We got out bidded by probably hundreds of billions I seem to recall about 1.3 years ago. Since this an auction format I won't even bother tieing up my billion ISK again waiting over a month to get it back after finding out I WAS NOT @#$!!! SPACERICH ENOUGH TO COMPETE WITH NULL SEC MEGA CORPs!

Sorry I hope they have fun but I'm sitting this one out after my first reading hope I did miss somthing butI'm not bothering after my first notso greatexperience.

Good luck though & have fun those SPACE RICH MEGA ALLIANCE members that thru TECH RICHSes don't have to wade thru the process of tieing up hundreds of PLEX (that now cost 700 million ISK each and will soon inflate to 800-900 ISK ) from thier own individual pockets.

If this wasn't so clearly organized by CCP I would have to assume it's a giant scam. 20 PLEX just to BID to get in? Are you ******* kidding me, CCP?

If the bare minimum of teams bid on spots and they all bid the bare minimum of PLEX, that's roughly $10, 000 in PLEX. Since it's clear that the "$10, 000 prize pool" being offered is actually being paid for by the players, why should people willingly submit to such an obvious player-funded publicity grab?

If they want to 'weed out' non serious teams set a reasonable entry fee of a few billion ISK to be 'entered' into a drawing for participation. This keeps most of the 'rabble' out and shows your team has the resources to fit competitive ships, etc.

And while yes, 20 plex is not unreasonable for a 10-20 member 'team' to raise, let's not kid ourselves with how much the 32 slots will be 'sold' for, which will be many, many times this.

If I'm running an alliance with hundreds of billions at my disposal, I form several teams, buy as many 'slots' as I can and the odds are very much in our favor.

The reason e-sports are entertaining to watch is because they are 'generally' skill and team based.

Two people playing starcraft or halo or whatever for prizes generally have the same chances to compete.

It's like having a lottery for $1 million, but only selling 32 tickets that cost at least $10,000 each with no upper limit.

It'd be interesting for the alliance to find enough teams where:

They'll fight (as throwing the match leads to disqualification)
They can trust the actual players to hand over the prize money that'll be paid to them (as it doesn't go to the captains. but to all the players directly.)

Come on guys, it's 20 plex PER TEAM. With up to 20 people per team, thats 1 plex per teammember. If you cannot afford to purchase one plex for entry into a tournament, well you have no business being in the tournament. In the tournament you will have to field your own ships. These ships will esplode, if you can't afford a single plex you probably cant afford losing ships each match.

Having a buy-in creates for a quality tournament. A buy-in prevents the riff-raft from joining, those with no expectation of wining but with nothing better to do. As a spectator I don't want to watch the one skilled team that was lucky enough to get in just smash all the other noob teams. I want to see good fights.

Also where do you expect the prize money to come from with no buy in? Are you going to donate 10 grand so we can host a tournament with no buy in? Buy-ins allow for prizes... No buy-in, no prize, no tournament.
