PC problems after uninstalling the game

I have already filled up a petition, the answer so far did not help me at all and I do want to solve this by this weekend.

If someone has some skills solving up this problem, I will appreciate it.

Two days ago I uninstalled Eve due to a PC cleanup (uninstalled with the usual windows uninstall tool) and at the end, the Eve uninstaller program, asked me to clear all cache data (or something).

I choosed yes.

At the end of the uninstallation, most of all my desktop icons got the 'default' appearence, that one indicating no programs are assigned to it.

Now for every single program I want to run, I have to assign it manually (make it Eve itself or even windows paint).
For example, I have managed to open Word and Winrar files (I just choose manually the program to associate to it from the list), but everything else is messed up.

Internet explorer and Firefox are having the same issue, but luckily if I open Firefox, and empty browser page appears, but a download message appears asking me to download firefox.exe saying which is a binary file.
I am sure it is not a virus, because opening all other programs via Firefox, the same message appears giving me different sizes of theyr relative files (usually no more than 100kb).

Useless to say I cannot even open regedit or anything else, because being executable files, I need to associate to them the relative program.

Only help I had so far is to run a 'system recovery', but if you paid enough attention three lines up, you will realise I actually cannot do that unless I can find what 'program' is needed to run -I guess .exe- files.

Please help me babies!

The solution is obvious!

Biomass!!!

On a more serious note, try reinstalling the game?

-EDIT-

Sounds like random glitch, when the uninstaller removed the shortcuts it might have removed all of them.

Also, a quick google search helps alot...

Also, try going into "safe mode" (I think you spam F8 before windows starts) then go into the default Admin acct.

Operating system?

First of all create a backup of all your current files and then boot windows up in safe mode then try to do a system restore to before you uninstalled eve online after that I suggest you install revo uninstaller and try to uninstall eve again and see what happens.

After that post here with your results and I'll try to help you further

PS: why the hell would you uninstall eve anyhow

Windows 7 or Windows 8; might make a big difference. Windows 8 is still horrible. I used it for maybe a month and it crashed and never recovered. Mostly because I was so sick of it by that point, I didn't bother trying to hard to get it back. Awful operating system.

For Windows 7, I'd say go into Computer, Right-click on your OS Hard drive, and select properties from the menu. Go to tools and click on Error Checking. Run that with a restart, (make sure to check off Automatically attempt file system repairs and Attempt recovery of bad sectors).

When it's finished, run a defrag after clearing your cache data. You might get it back when you finish the system check, but do the defrag anyway as it might be part of the problem.

Unfortunately, this might not work, and it is entirely possible your system reserved partition is fragged and scrambled. This has happened to me with Win 7, though only once when it was still new. It can't be fixed that I know of, cannot be defragged, and cannot be recovered afaik.

The only thing you can do at this point is attempt data recovery, then do a clean install, as far as I know. Take it to a PC shop if you feel more comfortable with that. Use the Defrag tool to check it with an Analyze disk check, just to see if it is fragged. Attempt to defrag it if it show much fragmentation, but if it doesn't work, it's probably as I said.

I know it's still an issue, because mine is doing it again. Not severe though; it's only 1% and hasn't changed, even though I can't defrag it.

It could be something else, but those are the first things I would look for. Aside from that, the description you give indicates it might have something to do with Windows Explorer. That can be pretty problematic. Potentially resulting from the above issue, but it's also possible it is caused by something else.

Also, try Malware bytes Anti-malware, CC Cleaner, etc.. No sense giving up on it until you are certain it is unrecoverable. If you have the install disk, you might also be able to try a system recovery.

Even in safe mode I cannot run anything. All files listed in the 'start' bar have theyr icon image shown with Firefox logo on a white background. If I open them, a firefox page opens and asks me to download the relative file (as described above)

If I get to theyr original folder (for example Winrar), I can see the .exe file listed as 'default' with no programs associated to it, if I double click on it, it shows like I have given it the 'cut' command. Right clicking on it doesn't help either, I only have cut/copy options and properties.

To give you another example, if I try to download the Eve full client again, I can't install it. I can actually download the eve installer program (that 4mb .exe file), but I can't run the file itself.

lanyaie : Thank You but that doesn't work for me as I have Windows XP

Could be anything really. Not necessarily even related to eve uninstall or something what just got triggered by it.

Anyway fixing file associations manually is very tricky. You can do extension by extension manually from command prompt, but I suggest you try to find some repair tool to do this for you. If you can roll back to some recent system repair point, that should do it also...

For manual procedure refer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/184082

I think it's an Explorer issue too. But it started as soon as the Eve uninstaller cleared all cache data.
I do have Malware bytes Anti-malware already installed, but I can't run it.

I think it could be a start if I know what 'program' is needed to associate it when I run ir manually from its original folder, because if I try to run it from there, I get the option do find it on the web or manually choose it from a list

you could try the solution posted at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950505, scroll down to the let me fix it myself section, all the needed reg keys for running exe's and how to actually import them with a borked system are there.

IIRC the file type association for an exe is application if that helps, sounds strange but from what I remember application is the association needed to run executables.

Clearing the cache data only removes cache from the eve user folder with the only thing being cleared being models and eve settings so unless you installed eve to C:\Windows\System32 folder even then I don't think this is related. I'm going with a virus that's ****** your registry, i had a nasty one a while back that severed the links between shortcut on the desktop and start menu and the actual applications X
