Is there any idiots guides out there ?

like snipits of code with explanations how to pull api info, how to parse etc...

they seems to be nothing for people wanting to learn and create, they all assume you already know what you are doing..

I have looked for indepth info / doc's on the php lib's and they basically baffle me... where do you start what functions to call how to call them etc.

As you can tell I am a novice and like the game (since 2007) and wanting to get into this side of things..

I've thought about doing bits. it's a fair amount of work though.

Unfortunately, you'll pretty much have to learn the language that you want to use. PHP's a fairly popular one, as it's simple to use, doesn't require compilation and is supported in most web hosts.

For the very basics in how to use it to parse the data from the api, take a look at this forum post https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=96530 as it will show you at least part of it.

Most XML parsing modules are a bit of a pain to work with, so you might want to look at something like pheal instead. http://wiki.eve-id.net/Pheal as it'll break down the 'heavy lifting' a little.
