lets be honest, unless bethesda fails it will be skyrim. short of that will most likely be gears 3.

Skyrim, BF3, Portal 2 and Deus Ex are the only real candidates, though i get the sneaking suspicion that Saint's Row 3 will surprise many people.

Rage is out already - It's a good first step for id to make something other than an engine demo, but it's not there yet.

Don't really know any other releases this year that would deserve it. CoD and GoW are rehashes, pretty ones, good ones, but rehashes nonetheless. Arguably BF3 fits this mold aswell, but it has other strengths to fall back on. That game will win on the sound department in any case (VERY surprised if it didnt), possibly graphics.

If you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all...

BF3 won't take off on console because of the terrible beta and when they demo the game they only show the PC version, PC games rarely if ever have any chance of GOTY because its a dieing market. sorry fanboys but its true, the only reason PC has any sort of comeback atm is the long console cycle.

Gears 3 surprised me, a lot changed with the game but your right its still pretty much the same. the singleplayer was epic though and with the new game modes and better horde it really does have a chance

IMO though, skyrim has it. unless its terribly buggy, short, or boring it has the best chance.

Last year console game sales dropped overall whilst the PC market grew by a staggering amount due to digital distribution, ease of purchase and competitive prices (AAA console release £40, AAA PC release £30) have resulted in a massive jump in sales.

MMO, Digital and retail sales for the PC where worth $7.3b and are actually increasing, the console market was worth $10.6b and fell by nearly 30%. Far from dieing the PC market is now recovering.

yes, MMO and RTS's are the only things that sell on PC, remove them and PC games are dead.

starcraft 2
WOW cataclysm
AION expansion
KOTR preorders might have been taken into consideration also...

your very slow if you honestly think shooters and RPGs are selling more on PC then on consoles. if they sold more on PC they would be made specifically for PC and console would get a minor port of the game, so far it looks like battlefield 3 is the only game this year they are doing that too.

i guess you can call the witcher 2 a port but according to them its tailor made for xbox.

Selling more? No, I never claimed that at all. Just pointing out that the PC is no longer a dieing market because its recovering. As I quoted total PC sales came to $7.3b, of which only $2.7b came from MMOs.

I doubt Star Craft 2 sales where worth over $4b, like I said PC sales are recovering while console sales are dropping. Actually I dont think dropping is the right description, its more like they are crashing.

Revenue from every single other gaming genre grew, MMO revenue increased, PC sales overall increased, Casual gaming, social network gaming and mobile gaming all grew by significant amounts. Yet the drop in console revenue was enough to drop the total for video game revenue by 2%.

The trends are pretty clear, people are dumping the consoles for games on PC, MMOs and Facebook style games.

i hope PC recovers, but unless MS/sony fail to come out with new consoles soon.TM it will just die off again.

the difference in graphics is hugely noticeable now, also anyone who has both major consoles will want a gaming PC to see the difference.

to an extent i think the retail pre built PC market is also starting to jump on decently powered laptops that can play light games for an affordable price.

i'l stand by this though
when new consoles come out, unless they fail, PC will fall back into the slump it was in years ago.

PS
thanks for not being one of the PC fanboys that are convinced 95% of gamers are on PC.

depends i would say, i don't trust GOTY awards unless its from multiple sources
i think skyrim has it in the bag still.
