PvP Skill Plan

I am just returning to Eve after a several year break. I could really use some help with a PvP skill plan. Does any one have a one year skill plan for a new PvP pilot I could pop in Evemon to see what is there and how the skills interact? I have built competent ratters before but never a pure PvP toon and I really don't want to screw this up.

Thanks for any help

Quite a broad question, as you've not provided any direction.

So here is a general answer: use certificates.

* Core Competency Standard
* Defense Standard
* Gunnery Standard
* Navigation: High-Velocity Helmsman Standard
* Electronic Warfare: Propulsion Jammer Operator Standard

Others (optional):
* Leadership: Tactical Commander Basic
* Drones Standard
* Missiles Standard
I highly recommend the first two.

Plan for cruisers and battlecruisers.

Ok so I can just select a certificate in EVEmon and all the related skills will be assigned? And by going this route I can build a competent PvP character?

I just want to be sure I understand why a skill is needed and how it affects the character that's my biggest concern.

pick a ship you want to fly, get a good fit for it, train to use all the mods on it as T2, train tanking skills to 4/5, train all support skills for it to 4/5.
rinse and repeat.

Certificates in general are not without flaws, but they are a decent road-map when you are utterly lost, especially the ones I described above.

Read the skills description then. Do some research of your own. THINK of what you are going to need.

You are going to need:

* Tanking skills (or you can pop before logistics can respond to rep you)
* Weapon system skills (or you can use harsh language I suppose)
* Fitting skills (or you can just admire the modules sitting in your cargohold)
* Capacitor skills (or you can watch the fleet warp away while you wait for cap to recharge)
* Navigation skills (or you can be the straggler out of logistics range)
* Targeting skills (or you can lock your enemy after he's already gotten a few volley's off against you)
* Warp disruption skill (or you can wave at your targets as they warp away in hull)
* Etc. (there are many more reasons for all of the above too, but I was trying to make a point)

The certificates I described provide all those.

The optional ones are lower priority:

* Leadership for forming a fleet. I really recommend at least wing commander 2 (4 is even better), as there is nothing more annoying than wanting to add more people to the fleet, and there is nobody around with basic command skill.
* Drones, though not all ships use them, nor are they always practical when roaming.
* Missiles, because not all ships use them, and they are not always favored in PvP.

I recommended cruisers and battlecruiser training, as those hulls (including T2 & T3) compose the majority of all the ships in EVE, and are very popular for PvP. You will also have to lose a lot frigates to get to them. Lots and lots of frigates. Some people never train battleships or capitals.

But yes, once again I encourage you to actually understand what you are training and why.

Still don't get it? ASK SOMEONE! Big smile Make them use little words if necessary until you understand. EVE is complex, and nobody knows everything (not even me), so pilots in general respond well to people that want to learn.

P.S. I also respond to questions via EVE-mail.

And why do you think ratting character needs skills different from PVP oriented character? T2 tank, T2 gank, T2 drones, supports, navigation, rigs for tank/gank and fitting skills - isn't it all needed for ratting too? Only diff I can think of is Thermodynamics which is crucial for PVP and rarely used in PVE. Another thing is cap stability which in PVP is not so important especially that everybody and their dog is fitting neuts.

The needed skills for PVP are not much different from the skills needed for an effective ratting character. The difference lies in the fitting, not the skill set. A PVE fit usually does not work well for PVP, and like wise a PVP fit usually does not work well for PVE. But both fits can require the same basic skill set.

For example in PVP you will generally fit a passive buffer tank that will take time to burn through. As in PVP incoming damage can be very high and many fights are over quickly. You will be dead before your booster or repper has a chance to repair the damage. While a PVE ship almost always has a active tank as incoming DPS is much lower but more consistent over a longer period of time. A buffer tank gets worn down before the mission, or group of rats is dispatched.

The more specialized skills can wait until you know what your focus will be.

Guns are generally preferred in PVP as the damage is applied instantly, while missiles take time to land. You could be dead before your missiles reach the target. Projectiles seem to be the most popular and are often fit on all races ships for PVP, although energy weapons are getting more popular as T2 Pulse with scorch crystals are very effective.
