Okay, here are some things to keep in mind:

EVE Online does work in WINE -- but it requires some fairly specific configuration.

First off, when using WInetricks to download and install Corefonts/vcrun 200x/etc, for EVE to sucessfully run, you must modify the default prefix, rather than selecting EVE Online. WINE won't register your changes otherwise, and you'll just see the splash screen for a few seconds before silently dropping back to the desktop.

Keep in mind that if you've used Windows up to this point, EVE may not respond as quickly as it does in Windows; there may be lag or choppy framerates, but it shouldn't impact performance.

To run EVE after patching:

Open Winetricks, select Eve Online, and open Winecfg. Under 'Libraries', you need to click 'Edit' for 'mscvr100' and mscvr80' and set them both to 'builtin/native'. Leave mscvr09 alone, it's fine as-is. Don't change it for the default prefix; that causes a crash and an error message.

Addtional issues:

The Captain's Quarters do not work. If you attempt to change from the hangar screen to the CQ, the client will have a heart-attack and crash right back to the desktop with no error message. Turn off 'Load Station Environment' and/or don't switch from the hangar screen.

For an unknown reason, the game's music and sound may be disabled on log-in. The intro music plays just fine, but when the login process begins, the sound stops. I'm looking into whether it's a driver issue or just a quirk of Linux.

Text is very small in windowed mode (just go full-screen to fix it)

I've read reports that EVE can be crash-happy if you don't open Winecfg and set it to 'Emulate Virtual Desktop'. I haven't tested this personally, though.

:Edit: Tested -- Enabling HDR blacks out the ship and a lot of surroundings, and causes graphical corruption on the Fitting Screen. I'd recommend turning it off if you're experiencing problems.

If you run EVE with a browser open on the desktop, you may find the game extremely slow and unresponsive. To resolve the problem, exit the game as soon as you can and close the browser. The-game browser still works, but will display an error until you navigate to another page.

If you run the development branch of Wine (1.5), since about 1.5.10 the msvcr overrides aren't needed anymore. Don't even bother installing the packages. If they're already installed, remove the overrides and the game should both patch and run fine. I can't guarantee it'll work for everyone, but several people have reported it. If you have the d3d override, though, don't mess with that.

Will add to this, since it caught me before... with Load Station Environment off, you won't be able to spin your ship in station. If that bugs you, you can recheck Load Station Environment once you've successfully logged in outside CQ. After that, undock and redock, and voila! Happy-spin-time.
