hehe I've never heard that word before, curmudgeon...

Curmudgeon (n.) a bad-tempered, difficult, cantankerous person.

Aye, I'm a cranky curmudgeon at the ripe old age of 31 years, and don't ya forget it. Twisted

Or maybe I'm just too much of a girnie for my own good. P

Not to get all stereotypical but games that focus on gratification through mass destruction and egocentric power struggles tend to appeal more towards the masculine end of the gender spectrum, while games that encourage creativity, imagination, and exploration tend more towards the feminine.

So yeah, good luck getting her excited about statistical spreadsheets and the destruction of blobs of little colored squares occupying the vast emptiness of space, if you want to enjoy an MMO with your wife something in the fantasy genre would probably work better.

It seems to me that there is more creativity, imagination and exploration in EVE than in the standard fantasy mmos, except maybe the good old Ultima Online.
But i see what you mean. You can't really choose the color of your spaceship and you can't have a fluffy buny as drone.
Well, maybe if one day they bring a real good and rich Walk in Station, there will be more girls... even if it's just for that, it's worth that they do it Lol

what got me interested?

well, I'm a gamer anyway so frankly that's most of the battle =/ if she's not into games at all, you got your work cut out for you. And not to be too blunt, but you're prolly SOL if she doesn't anyway... I just haven't heard too many stories of success in that case - maybe you will be the lucky exception!

if she does like games, even like Farmville or whatever the latest fad is, great! You stand a chance (imo). You have to identify what she prefers - building? resource gathering? exploring? spending time with you IG? (ie mission running) Apply the appropriate Eve related activity and go for it.

It probably also helps if she likes puzzles, a lot of aspects of Eve are challenging in that sort of way (manufacturing especially).

Once you get past some of the "oh it's ships shooting stuff in space" and see the many activities you can participate in, it's a lot easier to get "into it".

I actually would let her do the various tutorials, don't give her "seed money" as it were, it just takes the joy out of accomplishing anything on your own. Let her ask questions, but don't answer them all in depth, keep it simple and help her find her own sources. Or if she is the kind to not want to ask questions, don't offer any! Especially criticism, as it tends to not be that well received.

on a final note, if she really does like Farmville, I'd strongly suggest you introduce her to PI (even if it's on an alt on your own acct) - I swear it's just Farmville in space. Not that that's a bad thing, I actually enjoy it myself. And it might help her get a handle on marketing/trading in game which is bloody complicated!

Ok, well anyway there's my two credits :P obviously my own opinion, good luck!

As another longtime female eve player, I think this is really good advice.

Smart wife. Rare commodity this days.

If you have in your hands the key to the fulfillment of your life's ambition and superiority over most, if you are aware that there is an absolute power on hand (just over the basic moral principles) how far are you willing to go and through what you are willing to tread?

So I wondered, does your wife/girlfiriend/whatever play?

If so, what made them join and are they any good at it?

my GF wont play eve online either... she just looks at me playing or reads a book instead. :(

Eve lets you fantasize you are in charge of your destiny. Women don't even want that popping through our heads. Make her CEO

I'd tried to get my wife to try LotRO with me, thinking she might like that, but she didn't. And she's definitely not the Hello Kitty type.

One day she downloaded Eve just to see what I was all into, hoping to make fun of me.

3+ years later, she's grown from mining and missioning to flying with an all-female pirate corp, ganking hulks in hulkageddon, and now living in nullsec.

And yes, for the last couple years, she's been CEO of her own corporation. It works :)

Posting in a stealth "make all the women reveal themselves" thread Lol

Seriously though, it's nice to see a female point of view, I know of a couple of female gamers that have expressed an interest in Eve, both are gamers with stuff ranging from JetSet Willy & Elite (back in the day hello sis) to BF3 & Halo. Neither has tried an MMO before, my sister is currently halfway through a buddy invite trial and loving it & her friend is seriously considering it.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.
