I remember Aura telling me "Welcome to your new life" when I just got out of character creation... EVE is not a game, it's a lifestyle :p

The skill queue
though skills train passively, eventually they drive you mad due to their incredibly long training duration and there is nothing you can do about it.

When you find it overly tedious to train, it often means you shouldn't be training that yet.

Don't think that's the case, having no problems, I'm 4's 5's in things of interest, 5's are in fitting skills mostly. Really likely behind the curve on getting T2guns, but 50 days(well 44 now as sharpshooter V is almost done), well, that's like planning making a sandwich for next week. Looking at T3 ships, over two months for ship and then support modules. Maybe I'll just buy a toon to try something new, but that's an odd game mechanic to avoid the grind. Bit in the doldrums of progression at the moment. Honestly I wish I could grind this faster by doing something.

Hmz. Arent 50+ day skills normal, most of my skills take about 2 months to train. And I really like that, you dont have to worry each day that your queue runs dry etc. And with busy real life nothing prevents you from not logging in for about a month.

Yeah once you start getting up there in sp... I got a bunch of skills half trained because I realized after a while I couldn't be arsed to finish training them P

case in point all the rigging skills

What the hell skills are you training?? I've never had a level V skill go over 30 days. Then again, I don't fly battleships or above, so maybe that's why.

To OP: Eve is like a gas. It will expand to take up as much time as you leave available to it.

Welcome!

Regardless of skills and training times, EVE is a gigantic place with thousands of Corps to choose from. Be patient and diligent when looking at corps. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=topics&f=265 Here is one place to start. Also do not be held to one faction space. Shop around. One of the greatest things EVE offers new players is the ability to make a 180 and train for something completely different.

Good Luck!

Pro-tip... you don't NEED every skill to be at level 5. Certain skills you can get away with at level 4 and come back to later to when you have other skills within a specialty trained up.
For example: I've trained up all my missile skills to level 4, giving me the ability to use most missileboats... now I'm going back and training up each one to level 5.

Also... the skill system is designed in such a way that you are "forced" to use "lower quality" ships and equipment to gain a feel for the mechanics and nuances of ship flight and/or combat (i.e. find ways to work around your limitations and play the game rather than worrying about skills and effectiveness). Once you skills begin to mature, you can use that experience to keep your more expensive ships/equipment safe and alive.

I want to play this game, but I don't want to have to play it a ton.

If I'd try to summarize the things that determine your advancement in eve, I'd mention the following three things:
- Character development. Its been said already, but this can be done mostly without playing much.
- Accumulation of assets/wealth. There's varying degrees of activity for that, from active to mostly passive
- Development of player skill and building of social bonds. There's no substitute for actually playing the game in this matter.

While some of the highlights of playing eve require more time investment, I believe that you can play eve casually and be happy. You'll just want to find a corp that fits that playstyle.

What you sow, in terms of time spent playing, so shall you reap, in rewards and enjoyment. As other have said you don't have to be online in order to progress your character. However, you do need to play in order to hone YOUR skills at playing the character properly.

It's the same old story as in any MMO. If you play casually don't expect access to the same capabilities as those who invest more time and effort into the game. That said, there is plenty to keep you happy no matter how often you play.

Well you can play this as you like, how much time you need to put into it to become good at it, depends on what you planning on doing.

For example industry manufacturing can be done in guite small time investment. If you want to become elite pvp player, well you need to play a lot more then that industry manufacturer does.
