The Forum Rules say:
Quote:
Bumping posts in order to keep them near the top of the list is also prohibited.
I would like to assume that rather than being outright prohibited, they are restricted by a certain interval between consecutive posts, as that is standard practice across virtually all forums. Usually it's once a day. My question is:

How long should I wait between consecutive posts (aka a bump)?

(If the answer is never bump at all, what should I do should my thread die, and when is it "dead"?)

Under some circumstances, bumping once a day is acceptable. Don't abuse this, and don't assume that its ok to bump every thread you create or like.

Post that might be appropriately bumped include:

*posts where you are attempting to sell a character, item or service (these kinds of threads come with their own rules, and include lotteries)
*posts for events (keep in events and gatherings)
*threads with exceptional popular support (eg, the dead horse thread)

Things where bumping will annoy people and possibly get you stern words from a GM:

*threads where everyone has shot you to pieces for posting something stupid but you persist in trying to find support (I've seen this more then once)
*threads where noone but you has posted and people are plainly uninterested in your post

Most threads should die. If they didn't, the forums would be horribly clogged. Use your brain, and apply bumps sparingly.

The beatings will continue until posting improves. -Magnus Cortex

Hello Ender-Atreides,

In some forum sections, bumping is permitted (the rules for those sections are outlined in the first ("stickied") post). Generally speaking, Sir Substance is right -- trying to attract attention to your posts by bumping will only annoy other players and make the forum moderators unhappy. Smile

I'd encourage people to post in relevant old threads rather than creating new ones on the same topic.

If you are bumping solely for the the purpose to keep a thread alive or at the top of the board, then the forum rules limit applies.

Some new players are hesitant to post in old pre-existing threads because the bumping policy is misunderstood.
