//edit2: it's working. it took max settings in graphics overdrive like so:

http://i.imgur.com/IfTTV.jpg

I tried *everything* else suggested on the internet in the past week... my guess at the problem is the card's ability to self-throttle, and taking the guesswork out of it and saying "go max" relieves something in the card......

I feel for everyone having issues with their card.. I must be one of the lucky ones.

(I also threw millions of errors in a memtestCL, but there was a theory it was due to the card architecture being too new, in fact later than the last build of, memtestCL)

//edit: I just realized this is not a CCP problem, most likely, but a card-based one. dis... regard this, i guess. I think i will integrate two computers running 680's or something. problem is i've sunk some more $$ into a total of 5 monitors--gotta run them somehow.

Devs-

the game crashes as soon as 3d elements are loaded in the login screen--the planet with the astroids. The computer goes to a black screen and no inputs are responsive. the in-game error reporting tool is not a viable option. (logserver needs to save events as it runs, otherwise the workspace is lost with the system lock and required reboot) what's visible to me in the workspace as the last entries are the "load /res" items

Motherboard: Asus Crossfire V Formula
CPU: AMD fx8120 black edition
RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8 release preview (both EVE-unstable)
Video: Asus HD7970 3GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 (HD7970-DC2T-3GD5)
Disk Drive: Intel 330 series 120GB SSD x2 in RAID 0
PSU: Corsair AX850
Also a 1300W pure sine wave UPS *just* to deliver stable voltage...

I built ^ that system in the last week to run my newest (fourth) account/character.

can I send you my computer so you have a rig that can reproduce this problem? all I'm doing is waiting anyway, and using my old computer to update skill queue.

can we have a more specific status on the progress of this fix, something that sounds human and not the standard 'it's being looked into'

Thanks

//I'm spending some time intentionally crashing my system to generate some reports for y'all.

I'm attending EVE Vegas next month--I could repackage everything in their boxes and bring them with--maybe send it back with one of the devs attending (half joking)

I'm in the same boat

7970 random system freezes.

Someone mentioned an EnableUlps fix but that does not fix this problem.

I posted this in the freezing problems with nvidia thread on this subforum. I hope something in this is transferrable to you folks with ATI cards and drivers -

OMG eve is beautiful again and not a giant frustration. Well, at long last I seem to have fixed my eve problem.

I think there is something with eve that wasn't getting along with the drivers and may have somehow corrupted them. But my laptop never encountered the problem, while my desktop did. I have no idea what it was that I did with eve on my desktop that I haven't done with my laptop (other than eve-voice, or ui scaling, or ts overlay). Whatever it was, though it fubared something with the driver. Even when I would download a new driver the problem would remain and even get worse.

Somehow in trying to update drivers since the problems started, I recently disabled my drivers.

So what I did with the latest driver update, 306.23, was I downloaded it to desktop. Then I shut down the computer and disconnected power cord.

Then I disconnected the power cable to the video card and unseated the card from the motherboard. Then reseated it and reconnected the power cable.

After bootup, I went to programs and features and uninstalled everything nvidea. One program would not unstall until after I restarted (again).

So then after restart, since I had already downloaded the new driver to desktop, I double clicked the nvidia driver version 306.23 to install it, and checked advanced option and then checked "do a clean install." It then installed the new drivers.

Whatever driver settings that may have been sitting in the system and had been fubarred by whatever eve settings or something I had done in or with eve must have either been cleaned out or overwritten with the reinstallation of the card and clean install of the driver. My desktop is happily running eve again as it used to.

I suggest folks that are not using nvidia try a similar method with their ATI drivers. Hopefully they have the ability to disable their drivers, unseat and reinstall their video card, do a clean install on their new driver.

I am quite reticent to mess with any display settings I currently have in eve and won't be using eve voice again or ts overlay or changing the ui scaling for fear that something with changing eve features or an addon voice display from ts can lead to some driver and card problem. If the freezing problem starts to occur again though I won't just ignore it at first if it is minor but take it as a warning that it could get worse and try to report what occurred just prior to the first event, in the hope that it helps CCP pinpoint what might be at the root of these freezing problems. Whether it be an issue with eve code, or video card manufacturer code, or some miscommunication between the two.

I hope this help others that have been having problems. o7

edit - all these steps might be necessary because previously i had tried a normal updat/install of the 306.23 driver and it had not fixed anything.

ah, I just remembered: a few years ago, when I purchased my first Eyefinity card (5770) and triple monitors... I had similar video crashes to the current 7xxx ones. it required a trick that involved opening a flash movie in a web browser--it would kick the card into 3D mode and hold it there for a smoother transition to a game client

and then it was fixed via drivers.

the ramp-up with this method from 2D to 3D was just ... gentler than opening a game straight from 2D desktop environment.

CS:Source does something similar with the valve logo video, server search screen, and finally the full 3D client. in comparison, EVE has a planet and asteroids render right at the login screen. I think it's a system shock.

however, It should be stressed that video crashes are NOT exclusive to EVE.

7xxx series is getting a little long in the tooth now, but my timer is somewhat later, since... I'm kinda committed to the ASUS version with Eyefinity6 support.

I'm thinking it's a waiting game for 100% uptime reliability. meanwhile... raging on the trusty old rig.

Hi, let me say I share your concern with this issue as I am one of the people in CCP who have a AMD HD 7850, this has lost me ships on TQ and also lost some of the code I've been working on. It's very frustrating and I wholly understand, from experience, this is a serious issue.
We have done some investigation into the issue and noticed that the problem is not specific to Eve but is an issue with this series of AMD GPUs as a whole. I would recommend that you let AMD know about your user pain at their driver survey site here: http://www.amdsurveys.com/se.ashx?s=5A1E27D20B2F3EBF
I apologize that that this doesn't immediately solve this issue, but this is something that AMD has to address and be shown the severity of.

My system has had perfect stability in every game I've played except for EVE; just got back into it a few weeks ago. Had no problems for first week, then I'd get 5+ system hangs (completely unresponsive to anything but hold power for 4s) in a day, then it'd be fine for a few days. Then started using the map and guaranteed hang within a minute. Was only using 1 client

I played with EVE quality settings, checked Windows error logs and uninstalled antivirus and all Catalyst extras except for display driver itself and nothing helped until..

Solved!!!
Unchecked 'Resource Cache Enabled' and set 'Fixed Window' instead of 'Fullscreen'. I now run 2 clients at max quality settings and have no issues.

Hope this works for others out there as well

ASUS Sabertooth X79
Intel Core i7-3820
32GB Corsair Vengeance LP
ASUS Radeon 7970

PS. I haven't gotten around to reinstalling Catalyst yet but considering problem persisted after it's removal, I doubt reinstallation will hurt EVE.

also make sure if you're running Windows 7: that you've applied SP1

that and the beta drivers have run solid for a day now.

this thread on overclock.net has a good list of driver tools. the uninstaller is insane... must use. http://www.overclock.net/t/1196856/official-amd-radeon-hd-7950-7970-owners-thread

Tried the beta drivers, tried the resource cache fix. Still get a lovely hard lock upon hitting F10 for that lovely starmap. I already submitted my info to AMD...I really hope they come out with some sort of a fix. I'd hate to think I wasted $500 on a 7970 only to find out that it just doesen't play well with my I7 920.

Anyways, not like I've been doing much except skill training this last year anyways, but it'd sure be nice to be able play if I did want to!

//edit3: my roommate suggested separate installs... I did that as well. my hope is the clients have their own allocation of resources, and with less pushing and pulling in the video card, maybe it will be more stable.

Ideally, the clients would have their own card hah

//edit2: crashed when jumping all 4 clients into jita simultaneously. based on the logic that a jump is a graphics drop and reload, and the problem with the card is its attempts to throttle itself at any opportunity, I tried it again with resource cache enabled, and it was fine. not only that, fps is a solid 59-60 on all three clients.

with this card, I think resource cache is your friend.

//edit: UPDATE Windows 8 64bit Professional with the beta drivers is solid as a rock. I can't do anything to crash my clients... http://i.imgur.com/H4l7w.jpg I'm springing for another 7970. EVEmap x2: http://i.imgur.com/2cvNZ.jpg Eyefinity controls and AMD Overdrive are disabled by windows now, but it works... I'm not touching a thing

One client setting that seemed suspicious to me is under "Display & Graphics" --> Present Interval: I set it to "Interval default."

about that star map... and docking, and jumping through gates, and starting the login screen-- they're all complete graphics changes

it might be causing the card to throttle itself to 2D mode or back to 3D mode and this is too much of a jump for the drivers and their control of the voltage

I think if the cards could be locked to full voltage and a constant clock speed, the instability would be gone.

giving the card control to "save power" doesn't... really appeal to someone who has purchased a 7xxx card, cuz... we're not trying to save money, what are the chances we're trying to save electricity. in fact once these issues are solved completely I'm getting a second 7970 for crossfire

one thing I still do is stagger my clients between login screen, character selection, and in-game... so that at least one of my clients is holding the card at 3D clocks/speeds...

if login and in-game are 3D, and character selection is 2D... I never let the card drop completely out of 3D.....

I might take the thing apart and re-paste the RAM--I compute in an air conditioned room, and four clients burns the RAM from the high thirties to the high sixties in under a minute. that could be a problem as well.

if I can find a way to do it, I want to stick a couple corsair water coolers on the card in place of the metal heatsinks

we're all a little minmatar

Then I assume you know roughly where the problem lies. Any advice on what graphical settings to use to avoid or minimize the problem?

Are you having ongoing discussions with AMD about this? Anything particular we can refer to when reporting this to AMD? System crash is a bit vague.

Yea im not waiting for AMD to fix the problem, i just orderd a nvidia card and im going to sell the AMD junk. It sucks i had to buy a new card but this has been going on for a while now and i dont feel like playing that back and forth game of hoping each new driver works.

i'm sending mine back to tigerdirect for the MSI version of the 7970 with Eyefinity 6.

I have my old 5770 in right now for stability reasons, and 3 screens on low res is making me a sad bear.

I have the same problem. Tried everything mention in this thread, nothing worked Evil.

My question: Is there any configurations with ATI 7XXX and Intel CPU with max details working ?
If yes, I will give a BIOS upgrade a try...
If no, we have to wait for CCP and ATI or throw the ATI boards in a waste disposal unit.
