Opinions on missiles?

OP don't give up missiles because of the proposed changes.

They are actually a hugh buff to the general missile line up and the 'nerf' to heavy missiles is just bringing them in line with the other long range medium sized weapon systems.

I for one love using missiles/rockets/HAM's in pvp as well as lasers.....so stick with it and there will be a whole new world of missile pvp coming from the changes in the winter release.

That is the Way, the Tao.

Balance is everything.

TL;DR

Current state of affairs (I'm ignore small missiles because I don't know much about them):
HMLs OP
HAMs decent, but outclassed by HMLs
Torpedoes are terrible
Cruises are terrible

After the proposed HML rebalance:
HMLs in-line with other medium LR weapons, most of which aren't particularly good, but certainly usable in the right situations (except lolmediumrails)
HAMs and maybe torps buffed due to TE/TC affecting missiles
Cruises still probably terrible

Even after the HML changes, I still think there needs to be some serious work done on torpedoes and cruises, and even HAMs in relations to HMLs (in particular, the explosion velocities and fitting requirements don't make much sense). I'm also not convinced that letting TDs/TEs/TCs affect missiles is a particularly good idea, but we'll have to wait and see what the numbers are on those.

Missiles are okay and they will remain okay even after CCP gets done with whatever it is they ultimately do. Probably.

However, in my opinion, if you are a newer player you would be far better off switching immediately to any kind of direct fire weapon.

The reasoning is simple: The support skills for missiles work on missiles alone. The months you devote to these skills apply only to this one class of weapon.

The gunnery support skills (in general) apply to ALL direct fire weapons. This means training them lays a great foundation for anything you want to do later. If this were not enough, training the complete lineup of missiles weapons (from Frigate through BS, both short and long range) takes FAR longer than the same weapons range in any of the direct fire weapons. It's not even close.

Missiles are fine enough, but do yourself a favor and switch early. Just do it. You will be glad you did.

Missiles have a place, but I agree with the above: train gunnery first, then missiles, even if you're a Caldari toon. (Though training Rockets may be helpful on certain frigates like the Condor.) Your gunnery skills have a much wider application than the missile skills do.

I don't much like missiles as a primary weapon platform except on rocket frigates (which are awesome) and light cruisers like the Caracal. Yes, they have the dial-a-damage aspect to them, but this isn't a big deal for most PVP/PVE profiles. Projectile turrets have the same benefits and also do direct damage; rails and blasters do better DPS at their respective ranges; and lasers don't need ammo. FoF missiles can be helpful if you're being jammed, but I find that drones are a better option in this scenario.

Rockets and missiles should always be part of your toolbox, but early on, gunnery has larger pay-offs.

Missiles don't have to worry about angular velocity. Missiles do have to worry about velocity.

They're situational, but generally useful.

The HML nerf is good because balance is good.

Well as of today missiles are planned on being nerfed to hell so looks like you won't be playing with missiles in pvp.

Oh? Are there any links I could read?

Interesting.

I may have to revisit some of the Caldari ships I used to fly, and shelved some time ago.... when this comes out, that is.
