I been gone for a few years and I'm just returning so please bare with me.
What is the point of a suicide gank? Other then some salvage and a shiny kill mail? Is it's something to do with insurance?
I promise I'm not trolling I just can't remember.

Hmm.... Not sure if troll?...

Think it's more for the lulz than anything.

Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?

1 or more ships destroy certain target that is known to have good cargo or expencive modules, losing their ships in the process. Their mate (or alt) quickly loots everything that survived ship explosions and maybe salvage wrecks. Basically, it's all about losing less than you make by selling modules/cargo drops from victims.

Lulz and killmails are also there.

You have 3 kinds of suicide ganks:

1. "For profit" Ganks: the type of gank that requires a fair bit of time and effort to pull off. The ganker's objective is to kill someone whose loot will pay for the gank itself (because the ganker will lose his/her ship) and hopefully more. As long as you tank you ships, don't carry uber valuable cargo, and/or don't "over-bling" your ship, you should be safe from these guys.

2. "lol" Ganks: no rhyme or reason. People were bored, had money to burn, didn't care about their security status, and you just HAPPENED to be there. Tank up your ships. Especially if you are flying something that has a reputation for never being tanked.

3. "Vendetta" Ganks: fairly rare as there are loads more complicated and sneaky ways to get at your enemies. However, there is sometimes nothing quite like ending the ship of someone you hate... especially if it's expensive. There is no real defense against this as cost is not a factor for the ganker. Just try not to **** someone off that bad next time.

edit:
ps: suicide gankers don't get insurance anymore.

Honstely most people suicide gank purely for 2 reasons.

1) Very easy to propagate a great ISK effieciency by killing them. IE padding your killboard. You lose 10-15m in a fitted destroyer and you kill a hulk worth 250m.

2) It really is a lot of fun for an hour or two.
