Hey guys, I've been reading posts on exploration down the road, but my problem is what do I do in the meantime? I've 3 or 4 days into this character and realize my scanning abilities are about where they should be but I'm not having luck with scans. I've been using the 5 probes like the youtube tutorial recommends but I have had quite a few scans that can only get to about 50-60% and no more no matter how I arrange the probes at the lowest range/highest strength. That all being said it appears I just need to get more skill levels so I can increase probes used and all that.

All of that is going to take awhile, so what should I do in the meantime? I've done all the intro missions and without investing a bunch of points and time into mining/industry/combat I am at a lose as to what to do. Should I just make sure the skills are training and start an alt to go into combat or mining? I'm in the queue for getting in a corp tailored to newer players since I really am at a loss of direction and how to progress.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

Well you can never go wrong with core skills, check your certs, and work them up. I am at a loss as to why you are not going to work on combat skills? I mean mining I get, a lot of people do not enjoy it.

I'm a nerd, you can check my stats!! Skilling Int/Mem at 45 sp per minute is how I mack!     I'm like a lapdog, all bark no bite.

You want to make sure you are using a ship that gives you a bonus to probe strength. This will help you out a lot. Example: Magnate for Amarr, it adds strength to your probes. Also if you have the isk get the Rigs for probe scan strength and the sisters launcher and probes.

Large Gravity Capacitor Upgrade I is the name of the rigs that well help increase your scanning skills

I don't mind combat, I just was trying to avoid using a bunch of time on that if my goal was exploration. I have some skills in it and can handle myself in the low level combat missions, just trying to not make that the cornerstone of what I do. I did that last time and it was fine, just trying to take a different route than most people take with this type of game, ya know?

I have 3 or 4 certifications and am close to most of them in the core section so I am working on them as much as I can. I guess it would just make sense to train in exploration as I can but not have that be my focus this early on in my piloting career.

Meh, train what you like, sorry for sounding line an a1 a-hole!! I was just wondering why no combat skills!!! :) I am fixxing to go on a 6 month run of per-wil power skills, to get my BattleShip skills in order. And right sir, Sandbox means play as you want, good luck to you!!

I am not sure why you would wait if that is what you want to do, i would reccomend getting your frig skills up for one of the scan T2 frigs, but that is pretty fast to do.

Oh no worries bud, I wasn't thinking you came off like that. I just like to do what everyone else doesn't. That generally gives me a niche somewhere other than a nameless ship that might be able to do some damage. I have int and mem as my primary attributes, hoping that was the right way to go heh.

OH, I have started working on SOE missions, I had seen stuff about them on exploring posts so I figured that was a good way to go.

yupepr SOE is good, hard to pick one where you do not lose main faction, SOE is one of those. Since I move out of GAL space, my standings have taken a big nose dive!! gonna have to go do some misions before the homeland fires on me!! Big smile

Unless i am mis-understanding...

Exploration need tons of ship/weaponry skills to kill the rats guarding the sites. The better the sites, the bigger the rats.

Your quote: "I've 3 or 4 days into this character and realize my scanning abilities are about where they should be"

You need skills at 3 minimum to find the best sites. Sisters gear for probing also helps. I don't think 3 - 4 days skilling is going to cut it for you.

Since you are pretty much brand new, do this assuming you are still in Minmatar space:

Get Hacking to III (11 hrs), Astrometrics to III (10hrs), and Astro Rangefinding to at least III (30hrs). Once this is done (you probably have already done it), Learn Destroyers to IV (about 18 hours) and get into a Thrasher with a codebreaker and probe launcher.

Most radar sites in high sec are unguarded or only guarded by a handful of frigates (a few spawn dessies). Thrashers maul frigates. Forget about all other sites for now and just do radar sites. You will make a significant amount of money for such a new character.

Buy sisters probes once you can afford them. Then work on your fitting and combat skills and start adding in complexes when you can do them. Don't waste your time on Mag sites, they will only slow you down.

Many signatures have such low strengths that bonused ships are required to scan them down. Faction probes and a faction launcher go a long way, as does flying a bonused ship or using scan strength rigs. Be sure to train the scan strength skill (I forget which) to 4 also.

^ This.

Doing radar sites is the quickest way to make lots of isk for a new player. Using this you can jump into a cruiser and start tackling DED 3 sites, then 4 in a BC, etc. Have a plan to get your scanning skills to a decent level and then start focusing on support and core combat skills. Take some time to also scout quiet areas where the chances of finding radar sites are higher. There are many of these 'backwater' systems, even in high-sec.
