Caveat emptor.

tbh if CCP just banned the spambots right away there would be much less spam and actual scams with effort.

The problem is more the constant spam than the actual scam. Just taking a look at how many bots there are in Jita makes you realize that the scam is not the problem but the spam.

/c

I know someone - might be you chribba- had a graph a few years back showing how often specific people spammed their scams/contract on a daily and hourly base in jita showing they could only have been automated spams.Wondering if CCP even gave that thread a look ...

For myself i never even look at jita local , even when i'm trading there i got it shut down it's 99 % crap/scam anywayz.

I've posted such stuff here and there yes, latest one not too long ago.

Easy to check bots - just check this guy http://eve-live.com/p/Raphael_Sheen (and his stats), I first reported him as a bot on 2012-07-17 so yeah 2 months later his still OBVIOUS spamming(botting) is still going on.

Nope it is the one where they place them up for sale for like 800 mil and place a buy order in another region that shows a 200 mil profit, and then they remove the buy order. Big smile

This.

Don't be stupid, greedy or lazy and you won't get scammed. It's really quite simple.

I don't judge people by their race, religion, color, size, age, gender, or ethnicity. I judge them by their grammar, spelling, syntax, punctuation, clarity of expression, and logical consistency.

ahh the good old margin trading scam, lost 600 million to that bugger, I now own a bestower named "don't play drunk" with a worthless item in cargo. If you have any sense you only ever get caught the once

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

I always assume that the scammer is smarter than me, understands Eve better than me, and wants to make a fool out of me.

My solution...I never buy from contracts.

Having said that, some of them are so obvious that a player would have to be very drunk to fall for them.

This is not a signature.

I've never been scammed yet. I've had lots try, but if you pay attention and don't be a blundering fool you can easily avoid them.

That ones actually pretty clever. It's the dumb repetive posting in Jita local that gives it away every time Big smile

This is why scamming can be considered as the epitome and most sweet pvp in EvE. It's absolutely void of consequences and takes zero effort except copypasting in local. You can also ridicule the victims, pretend they're utterly dumb and you're doing New Eden a social darwinism service by getting rid of those people, who are in fact standard gamers who naively believe that EvE is a game.

There are more complicated scams than just "Selling plex for 340m [oh and for a plex]" and all the copy paste contracts in local. Some of them require actually having conversations with marks and talking them through your scheme all the while influencing their level of greed and desire for "easy money." Social engineering is an exhilarating process in itself.

But you are right, ridiculing someone who just gave away a billion isk for practically nothing because they were blindsided by greed or the "good intentions of EVE players everywhere!" is also a fun time.

But I am also an evil person and I'm going to Hell, so what do I know.

Have been travelling on several other market hubs but when i entered in Jita.. wow.

The scamming is absurd. Buying plex for 350mil, only to find out you'll also give a plex along with 350 mil... or buying 2plex for 1.2b only to find out he'll only pay1.2m

wtf?

I'm all into the player-run thing but i think this is over the top. I've read many scams in the past.. like ponzi schemes turned bad or corporation thievery. Those are classy. It takes effort.

But this? Pure absurd. There's no merit in this. People are deliberatly, in-your-face, taking advantage of a game mechanic in order to trick you into basically giving away your wealth, and more.

I'm all for regulating this type of activity. Just as you get flagged for killing people on secure areas, so should this behavior be criminalized. How to punish them? well.. just out of my head

Once a player gets flagged for promoting scams he should be flagged, and all his transactions would require manual verification. That should teach the pricks.

Scammin is legal in Eve....

I just turned into an egg, did I level up? I spent an hour trying to salvage a wreck, when in local a guy said "Stop it, this is my Tempest, I was AFK"

hey whiners who cannot bother to read contracts

contract me all your stuff. i promise i will read the contracts on your behalf.

that being said.. scammers are ANNOYING, who da **** is stupid enough to fall for the scams though?

Tedium and difficulty are not the same thing, if you don't realize this then STFU about game design.

It is strange that four of the Empires have no police, especially Amarr. Normally scams like these get you arrested, so the no consequence thing makes little sense. Then again those are the "sandbox" mechanics so like many things we just have to accept and suspend belief.

Just don't use contracts ever! And block anyone you see in Jita if you have to go there.

Do not assume anything above this line was typed by me. Nerf the Truth, it's inconvenient.

The contract system used to be much worse, and favored the scammer much more in the past IIRC.

The only scam that I've seen recently that is something that I would consider taking advantage of game mechanics would be the tengu + skillbooks (instead of actual subs) since in the contract it's not really well written that you're buying skill books. I think though that the devs did the best they could with the contracts, I dont feel it should be expected to make the system absolutely perfect.

Either way, I disagree with the OP, the contracts have gotten much better then when I used to play internet spaceships.

I'm all for scams, but PLEX scamming should be a permaban situation IMO. I'm just waiting to see what happens when someone gets scammed on PLEX so says "Well F you" and does a chargeback. That should be interesting.

Wouldn't go that far, but there should be risk or punishment of some sort. Say a chance of scam failing and loosing your own cash, a bit of Russian roulette wouldn't hurt.

Look. The scammers are performing a service. They teach you how to spot scams. They teach you to check for that sort of thing. Their mere presence makes you a better, more cautious consumer, and you blame them for this?

Falling for a Jita scam is often a newbie's first true greeting to the world of Eve. The realization that everything in Jita local is a scam, is a valuable experience. A few will get scammed and quit, sure. But a bunch more will start plotting their own crimes, inspired by how easy it is to earn money through bastardry.
