I didn't realise until recently, these still boost without any charges (they just take capacitor charge) is this intended?

When you load charges, obviously no cap is taken, but it seems a bit odd you can use them with no charges in.

Without charges they will just devour your cap in no time, that's the catch

Without charges XL-ASBs are basically T1 XX-Large Shield Boosters with very low fitting requirements, faster cycles and slightly worse efficiency. Lower-sized ASBs come quite close to one size up T1 Shield Boosters, cycling faster and thus repping more per second whilst costing more cap and taking significantly less fitting. They, naturally, fall short of higher meta and T2 modules.

Small -> Ancillary Small -> Medium -> Ancillary Medium -> Large -> Ancillary Large -> X-Large -> Ancillary X-Large
cap: 20 -> 48 -> 60 -> 142 -> 160 -> 380 -> 400 -> 940
boost: 23 -> 52 -> 68 -> 146 -> 180 -> 390 -> 450 -> 980
cycle: 2 -> 2 -> 3 -> 3 -> 4 -> 4 -> 5 -> 4

you also have to remember the trade off of the reload. you have a 1 minute( i believe) reload on the ASB. So if your in a fight and not gonna last another min but have some cap you might as well keep boosting. Another tactic is to OH and boost to full right before it runs out and hope you can buffer tank that reload cycle.
