In other news, actors are just as good or bad as the characters they play on screen.

OP, what you're doing here is taking someone else's opinion and turning it into fact.

The most you could do here is ask it in the question form.

To play devil's advocate, some people who are massive A-holes in game are indeed the exact same people in real life, and I know a null-sec leader FC or 70 that would fit that bill lol. IMO most (but not all) people tend towards behavior that makes them the most comfortable with how they see themsevles, even when "it's just a game". I'm no exception, I have zero interest in scamming or stealing or in real life and don't find those activities funin EVE, but I understand that this game would suck without people doing that stuff

Because people do nasty things in EVE doesn't mean they are nasty people, it just probably means "this is who you WOULD be in real life if there were no physical or social consequences to your actions". EVE is no different than the comments section of a news site where people talk all kinds of crap they would not say in real life.

I don't roleplay very well and I have no desire to inflict misery on others in real life or as a psychological outlet in a video game, so this is just me being me, for better or worse. Smile

I'm a really nice person in game, but a total **** out of it.

Where does that leave your internet psychologist theorising now?

Perhaps you're nice in game because of a guilty conscience that believes one can somehow atone for being a real life dipstick through random acts of kindness in a virtual universe? P

Nope, I just do it to mess with the heads of idiots who think that simplistic statements can sum up complex realities.

Eve Online and the emergent gameplay therein; is a product of our society. In the 60's decisions were made with far-reaching impacts that are coming to harvest today. Removing the bible from schools and the outlaw of mentioning of God anywhere in public.

Legal and easy abortions which were intended to be safe and rare. Are now used as a major form of birth control. Liberal democratic policies which promotes the idea of "you are your own God, there is no other, do what you wish."

I for one, am stunned at the self-righteous, moral high ground that soo many take in regards to this game, whereas our society is demanding that morals be tossed to the wind. What is good and what is evil? Who decides if there is no God? No higher authority than ourselves?

Oh you mean the massive and sustained drop in violent crime we've seen over the last couple of decades?

Well I suppose with the amount of gratuitous and bloody violence, ****, slavery, incest, theft, treachery and child-murder in the Bible, it's hardly surprising that removing such a rich source of bad ideas has had such a positive result.

You sound like my CEO, hes a stand up guy in/out of game and freaking difficult to deal with sometimes because of it sometimes. I almost wish some days he was a pirate or scammer!!! ROFL

I agree, whatever someone plays is normally an insight into personality, but you cant say that sort of thing without it basically being wrong... RP is a good example of this, Im a gal but not Gallente, and I play as "myself" since Idont like RP much... so whatever... we need everyone to make this work. Bring it on u freaky rats and scams!

Thread cleaned a bit.

It's an interesting topic, but lets keep it on topic and not try and sidetrack into politics and so on.

So the theory some of you support is that if you are a jerk in game, it is a reflection of your true character.

I have characters in game that are very helpful to other players and do not vary from that behavior (this one is one of them), I have characters in game that are ruthless and cruel and do not vary from that behavior, I have characters in game that are completely selfish and only motivated (for good or ill) by greed. So which of these character types, that do not change their MO, are actually a refection of my "real" self? If you pick one, then what does that say about the others... other than to invalidate your theory?

I ran pen and paper RPG's for a decade or so. In doing so I portrayed everything from a celibate holy man to a bloodlust filled demon, to an innocent child. Which one of those acurately reflects my true personality... and once you have chosen one, how do you explain the others?

For several years I was involved in acting. During that time I portrayed the hero, the villian, and occasionally the villian that becomes a hero. What does that do to your little theory?

You fail to realize that often in games or professions that allow portraying something other than yourself a good person can find enjoyment pretending to be something they are not... as can a person that in your piously judgemental way you consider a bad person enjoy playing the humanitarian.

Life, morality, and human behavior are not... and never will be... as simplistic and easy to define as apparently you would like to believe.

Some people playing whatever game are simply and always be stupid/jackass/fake bad boys/paranoid rl or in game, but there's nothing possible to improve them no matter how hard you try. Darwin law just didn't applied to them and that is a fact.

You know it, it's ok. Be sad for them not knowing who they really are and let them be.

This being said, the majority of people playing on the internet are awesome people once you pick the time to know them better. I'm making tons of new relations, people at the first time I wouldn't even give them a chance for whatever but once the step is done you can find they're actually very interesting people, often very cool and probably people you might as well keep on your friend list for a long while.
